In the past year or two, Indonesia has seen a surge in demonstrations, many of which have quickly escalated into violence. That wasn't the Indonesia I remembered under the previous president, Jokowi. Since the current president, Prabowo, took office, this kind of unrest seems to have become much more frequent in Indonesia.
Prabowo came to power by tapping into a brand of indigenous Indonesian nationalism—but nationalism is a double-edged sword, especially in developing countries, where it often yields little in the way of tangible achievements. If you can't keep delivering new momentum to the masses, it can easily spiral out of control—unless, of course, you can pull off what Modi did: spin the downing of six fighter jets as a great victory and get the low-IQ Indian public to buy it. Short of that kind of propaganda wizardry, nationalism is a very hard beast to keep on a leash.
