Boy was I naive about the programming market when I graduated University.

I thought most programming jobs involved doing interesting work. I thought I would be involved in creating technology.

Not only is that not the case: you are explicitly prohibited from doing so.

You are not allowed to create technology. You are only allowed to use tech that others have created. They say it's "best practice". They say it's bad and evil to "re-invent the wheel".

This is not only the opinion of managers and business side. It's also the opinion of your fellow programmers. Your "team mates".

Of course, I would always find a way to create things rather than just consume, but you have to fight tooth and nail to get the space to do it. It's not the regular job pattern.
