From his prison cell, Ruben Vardanyan’s call for true and lasting peace
Despite more than 500 days of illegal imprisonment, Ruben Vardanyan's voice remains unbroken as he advocates for a peace grounded in fundamental human values, based on dignity, creating a foundation for genuine coexistence in the South Caucasus. Vardanyan sent an audio message from the Baku isolation ward through his family, requesting that the phone conversation be recorded and made public. He calls for a “real, stable, long-term peace – not just on a paper, but one that is sustainable and is adhered to by all people”.
The full audio version of the message is available here https://t.co/v4Kw84IGTc
Please see this important update on my client @RubenVardanyan_’s situation. One week later, his blood pressure is up to 140/11 and he has lost six kgs (13 lbs) & the #Azerbaijan military court refused five motions to postpone the trial and insisted Ruben attend, despite his being on the verge of passing out. #HumanRights
To the International Community:
As major Armenian diasporan organizations worldwide and NGOs working in the Republic of Armenia, we the undersigned, are writing to urge you to take immediate action to end Azerbaijan’s political persecution of Ruben Vardanyan, a globally-respected Armenian philanthropist and native of Armenia.
Now 18 months into captivity, under wretched conditions and charged with committing crimes against the Azerbaijani state by standing on the side of the Armenians of Nagorno- Karabagh during the 2020 war and its aftermath, Mr. Vardanyan recently went on a hunger strike. His intention is to underscore the urgent need for international intervention to prevent further violations of his basic human right to a fair trial that conforms with international laws of justice.
During a brief phone call with his family from a Baku prison on February 19, 2025, Mr. Vardanyan cited Azerbaijan’s blatant violations of due process and international standards. He highlighted serious procedural violations that have tainted the proceedings and reaffirmed that his persecution is part of a broader effort to criminalize Armenians who have supported or shown solidarity with the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabagh (also referred to as Artsakh in the Armenian language.)
Mr. Vardanyan outlined his ill-treatment in detention, how he has been coerced to sign falsified case materials, and denied the right to prepare a defense, just to name a few of Azerbaijan's tactics to undermine his human rights and render his conviction a foregone conclusion.
Regrettably, Mr. Vardanyan's previous appeal to international organizations and the media regarding the gross human rights violations against Armenian detainees went unanswered, leading to even graver consequences. His current hunger strike is not only a protest but a dire warning—continued silence and inaction will only worsen the plight of Armenian prisoners of war and detained civilians illegally held by Azerbaijan.
We strongly urge you to take a resolute stance against the Aliyev regime to defend justice, human dignity, and the rule of law, before it’s too late. We ask you to demand:
• Justice for all Armenian political prisoners and prisoners of war illegally held in Baku
• An immediate and thorough investigation into the mistreatment of Ruben Vardanyan and the ongoing violations of his human rights to a fair trial
• Transparency and accountability in judicial proceedings by ensuring access for independent international observers and legal representatives
• Urgent action to compel Azerbaijan to uphold its international obligations and end the politically-motivated persecution of Armenian citizens
We look forward to your decisive action in addressing this urgent matter and would greatly appreciate your reporting your efforts and findings to us in a timely manner.
Respectfully yours,

Today the Swedish parlament had its yearly foreign policies debate. Here is an English translation of my speech.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
A few hundred miles from here sits a dictator. A dictator who terrorizes his neighboring country. A smaller state, a democratic state with its eyes turned westward. The dictator says that the neighboring country is ruled by fascists, he says that he must destroy these alleged fascists. The dictator also shows a harsh attitude towards democratic states in the West, which support the small neighboring country. He says that through their support they threaten peace and stability in the region.
But Mr. Speaker. I am not talking about Vladimir Putin. I am not talking about Russia and Ukraine. Southeast of Ukraine lies the Caucasus, and the countries of Azerbaijan and Armenia. For many decades, they were part of the Soviet Union, but since the 1990s, they have been independent states. But while Christian Armenia has developed in a democratic direction, and today has a government that sees a future with the West rather than in Putin's post-Soviet sphere of interest, things look drastically different in Muslim Azerbaijan. The country has been a dictatorship since its independence, currently under President Ilham Aliyev, who inherited the post from his father. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the region has been plagued by several armed conflicts over territory between the two countries, especially the mountainous region of Artsakh. An area long inhabited by Christian Armenians, who for natural reasons wanted to be part of Armenia. Something that was not accepted by Azerbaijan, citing the borders drawn by Joseph Stalin. One tyrant used another to justify his claims.
The latest chapter in this story came in September 2023. After 9 months of blockade and humanitarian suffering, the Azerbaijani army entered and took control of Artsakh. What followed was an ethnic cleansing, over 100,000 Armenians, 99% of the area's population, were forced to flee in fear for their lives and leave the home where they had lived for generations. Artsakh has since become the least free place in the world, according to the well-respected think tank Freedom House. A black abyss where no freedom, no rights or human dignity exist. Not that Azerbaijan as a whole is that much better. The country is, as I said, a dictatorship, and ranks lower than both Russia and Belarus. This is due to a lack of free elections, the imprisonment of opposition figures, and a repression of minorities, where anti-Armenian racism has almost become something of a state ideology.
But this is not just about what has happened or what is happening right now, but also about what may happen in the future. The dictator Aliyev repeatedly uses a warlike rhetoric against Armenia. He makes claims on Armenian territory, and he describes the democratically elected government as fascists whom he wants to eradicate. The risk of a new war does not feel so distant.
This is not talked about much in Europe. Which is perhaps not so strange. Azerbaijan is a much smaller country than Russia, they do not pose a threat in the way that Russia does. Standing up for Armenia and against Azerbaijan is first and foremost a moral obligation. The democratic West should always stand up for democracy and against barbarism.
But for those who do not think that morality is reason enough, there are also good strategic reasons. Armenia has moved away from Russia and towards Europe in recent years. But it is not a given that this positive development will continue. There are voices that think that the change of course was a mistake, and would rather lean towards Russia. There are also those who see neighboring Iran as a better security guarantee than the West. It is of course in the interest of the democratic West that more countries establish ties with us than with the regimes in Moscow and Tehran.
Therefore, let us in Sweden and the rest of the West support Armenia to the best of our ability and make it clear to the regime in Baku that we do not accept the way they treat their own population nor how they treat their neighbors.
For democracy, freedom and human rights. But also, for a stronger Europe, and a stronger Western civilization.
Thank you.

Armenia is an important foreign policy partner to Sweden. Bilaterally and through the EU, Sweden supports Armenia’s democracy, reforms and deepening relations with the EU.
@nasdaily How much did they pay you for this? It’s so pathetic to make this reportage just after the ethnic cleansing of almost 120 thousand Armenians in Nagorno-Karabagh. Big shame on you, you are disgusting 🤮
