WACO TEXAS 1993: The Branch Davidians.
The Cult that shocked the world.

David Koresh, born Vernon Wayne Howell in 1959, led the Branch Davidians, a millennialist offshoot of the Seventh-day Adventist movement. The group traced its roots to Victor Houteff’s Davidian Seventh-day Adventists in the 1930s and was formalized as the Branch Davidians by Ben Roden in the 1950s. They settled at Mount Carmel, a compound near Waco, Texas, where members lived communally while preparing for the apocalypse.

Howell joined in the early 1980s and, after power struggles following Lois Roden’s death, seized control by the late 1980s. He legally changed his name to David Koresh, presenting himself as a prophetic “sinful messiah” linked to the biblical King David and Cyrus the Great. Under his leadership the group adopted stricter apocalyptic beliefs. Koresh practiced polygamy, taking multiple “spiritual wives,” some reportedly as young as 11 or 12, which later fueled allegations of child sexual abuse. The Davidians also accumulated large quantities of firearms and ammunition, attracting federal scrutiny.

On February 28, 1993, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) attempted to serve arrest and search warrants related to illegal weapons. A gun battle erupted; four ATF agents and six Branch Davidians were killed. A 51-day siege followed under FBI control. Negotiations secured the release of some adults and 21 children, but most remained inside.

On April 19 the FBI inserted tear gas into the compound. Fires broke out—investigators concluded they were deliberately set by occupants—and the wooden buildings were destroyed within hours. Seventy-six Branch Davidians died, including Koresh and 25 children; nine escaped. Some victims showed gunshot wounds consistent with suicide or homicide. The tragedy remains one of the deadliest law-enforcement confrontations in U.S. history and continues to spark debate over tactics, religious freedom, and government authority.
