Completely bogus to equate Sharia with Christian canon law, as @AbdulElSayed did last night.

I have written books about Saudi Arabia and the Vatican.

Canon law cannot be invoked to override U.S. civil or criminal law for anyone, Catholic or not. A Catholic bishop has no authority to impose canon-law penalties through the state.

Sharia, where state-codified (Saudi Arabia, Iran, Taliban Afghanistan, some of Pakistan's penal code), is not confined to voluntary personal practice. It is the operative legal system, applied to all residents whether or not they are Muslim. Sharia has real civil and criminal force and includes blasphemy/apostasy statutes that carry the death penalty. Under Sharia, women are second class citizens, with unequal court testimony, restricted female guardianship and inheritance rules, to name just a few.

So the actual asymmetry isn't "Christian law vs. Muslim law." The entire point of Sharia is not coexistence inside a country built on religious freedom. It is to override the secular legal system with inflexible rules that leave zero room for other faiths.

That is the difference. El-Sayed got away with a false equivalency last night but hopefully other journalists will not let him dodge the issue so easily.

a) The targeted population grew larger every year with thousands of births monthly,

b) The targeted population refused at any time to surrender,

c) The genocidal party provided mass humanitarian aid,

d) The genocidal party warned the target population to move to safety,

e) The targeted population of the genocide held victory parades,

f) The genocidal party had the ability to wipe out the entire targeted party from the air without a single military casualty but intentionally chose not to do so,

g) The genocide abruptly stopped with a ceasefire agreement,

h) The target population produced hundreds of medical students who completed their university studies and graduated during the genocide.

Any one example will do. Don't even need specifics.

Someone I've known for twenty years lives a couple of blocks away. He is not a partisan, he does not post about the Middle East, and he is not the sort of person who chants anything.

Out of the blue, he asked me: "Do you think there's a genocide in Gaza?"

No, I told him. By every metric that matters — legal, historical, statistical — there is not.

He looked at me the way you look at someone who has just told you the earth is flat. Netanyahu wants to eliminate the Palestinian people, he said. Everybody knows that.

Not a study. Not a court ruling. Not a casualty figure. Just a thing everybody knows.

I have spent forty years as a reporter learning that "everybody knows" is where investigations begin, not where they end.

Tomorrow on Just the Facts: Genocide for Dummies: a plain-language piece on what the word actually means under international law, how Gaza compares on every relevant metric, and why even the strongest case for the genocide charge still doesn't clear the bar the word requires.

By the way, I know the title will bother some readers, and I address that directly in the piece. My argument is not that the subject is trivial — it is that the word is being used by people who cannot define it, at a threshold they have never examined, with a confidence that bears no relationship to the evidence.

A plain-language primer on what the word actually requires under international law, what the recognized cases look like, and why the evidence from Gaza falls short of that standard.

I did not write it as an advocate. I have no brief to defend and no side to win. I wrote it as a primer — the kind of thing you should read before you enter this argument, so that when you do, you know what the word requires and what a competent court would apply.

At the end, I lay out the evidence that would change my mind. Not a rhetorical gesture. A falsifiable standard, in writing, under my name:

Show me an order or a plan to destroy Palestinians as such. Show me a pattern of conduct from which destruction is the only reasonable inference — one that survives contact with the alternative explanation, a brutal war against an enemy embedded in a civilian population. Show me a competent tribunal that has weighed adversarial evidence, with a defense in the room, and returned that verdict.

Bring me those and I will write the correction myself.

On This Day in Holocaust History — August 26

1941 — The Kamianets-Podilskyi massacre begins. German SS and police units, assisted by local Ukrainian auxiliaries, begin a three-day mass shooting operation near Kamianets-Podilskyi in occupied Ukraine.
By August 28, approximately 23,600 Jewish men, women, and children have been murdered. The victims include thousands of local Jews and more than 14,000 Jews recently expelled from Hungarian-controlled territory.
At the time, it is the largest single mass murder of Jews yet committed under Nazi rule. The massacre marks a terrifying escalation: the killers are no longer principally targeting Jewish men but are attempting to annihilate entire communities, including children and the elderly.

1942 — All 518 children aboard a French transport are murdered at Auschwitz. Convoy 23, which departed the Drancy transit camp outside Paris on August 24, arrives at Auschwitz-Birkenau with approximately 1,000 Jewish deportees.
Only 92 adults are selected for forced labor. The remaining 908 people—including all 518 children under the age of fourteen—are sent directly to the gas chambers.
Many of the children had previously been separated from their parents at the French camps of Pithiviers and Beaune-la-Rolande. Their parents had already been deported. French authorities then transferred the unaccompanied children to Drancy and delivered them to the Germans for deportation.

1942 — Another transport leaves Drancy. On the same day, Convoy 24 departs Drancy carrying another 1,000 Jews, approximately 400 of them children under twelve.
When the train reach es Auschwitz on August 28, only 63 deportees are selected for forced labor. The other 937—including virtually all the children—are murdered immediately.

1942 — Vichy France conducts a mass roundup in the “Free Zone”
French police and gendarmes arrest approximately 6,500 foreign and stateless Jews throughout the unoccupied zone of southern France. The operation is organized by the Vichy government as part of its agreement to surrender thousands of Jews to Nazi Germany.
Families are seized from homes, hotels, refugee centers, and hiding places. Many of those arrested are transferred through French internment camps to Drancy and then deported to Auschwitz.
The roundup demonstrates that persecution was not confined to the German-occupied north. French authorities carried out arrests in territory where German forces were not yet present.

1942 — An act of resistance at Treblinka. According to a survivor account commonly dated to August 26, a Jewish deportee identified only as Friedman attacks a guard with a razor shortly after being unloaded at Treblinka, cutting the guard’s throat.
SS personnel and auxiliary guards respond by opening fire on the newly arrived prisoners. Friedman’s full identity and some details of the episode remain uncertain, but the account records an individual act of resistance at a place designed to strip its victims of every opportunity to resist.

The CBC is choosing to redefine terrorism in a way that downplays the atrocity of 9/11.

Refusing to call it an act of terrorism dishonours the victims, their families, the survivors, and the first responders who witnessed the horrors of that day.

9/11 was an act of terrorism. Full stop.

Trying to sanitize or rewrite that history is deeply offensive and does a disservice to everyone who was affected by the attacks.
