He said that keeping @Starlink out of South Africa is discouraging businesspeople from investing in rural areas where there is no working communications infrastructure.

South Africa has the chance to connect every farm, school and business to the best internet technology on the planet. Government is saying no.

@Starlink, the world's largest satellite network, is locked out. Not on performance. On ownership rules.

Government appears ready to welcome a so-called competitor instead. That competitor has zero commercial satellite customers anywhere in the world. Zero.

This is not empowerment. This is regulatory self-sabotage, and South Africans pay the price. Again.

Good to be back in my home country South Africa on vacation, but eish! The internet sucks. Like I time traveled back to early 2000 on dialup/ADSL. And Im not in rural area, this is a large coastal town. Struggle to do emails, forget about real work. ☹️

Starlink is turning school roofs into gateways to knowledge and self-improvement.

Peru: 160 schools and 30,000+ students.
Malawi: 30 rural schools, 100,000 students, and 1,500 teachers.

Haiti: a community tech center serving students and teachers.

Kenya: 30 remote schools.

Bolivia: 14 schools and 1,000+ students and teachers.
Paraguay and Brazil’s Amazon region are benefiting too.

South African schools were offered this same opportunity.

But apparently, rural students can wait until the equity-equivalent idea becomes politically convenient.

You almost have to admire South Africa’s ability to see a gift horse and ask for its B-BBEE certificate.

Millions across Africa are benefiting from Starlink, but South Africa is blocking it with its race-based laws.

• 13.3 million South Africans remain offline
• Only 17.4% of households have fixed internet at home
• In rural areas, that falls to just 2.7%

Starlink is already operating in more than 22 African countries.

• Many African markets are recording Starlink speeds above 100 Mbps
• Tens of thousands of African homes and businesses are already connected
• Rural clinics are using Starlink for remote medical consultations
• Zimbabwe: 67,057 Starlink subscribers (17x growth in 16 months). Starlink delivers 5–9x faster speeds than local providers across the region
• Botswana: Average median speed of 106 Mbps
• Eswatini: Average median speed of 121 Mbps
• Lesotho: Starlink now used in 25+ police stations and disaster response teams

South African farmers and rural communities are asking the government to approve Starlink. In many remote areas, people still have no reliable internet and must travel long distances just to get connected.

By blocking Starlink, the government is hurting the same people it is supposed to help.
