Wow! Today, I celebrate H.E President William Ruto @williamsruto for recognising the unique needs of women serving in our National Police Service through the introduction of maternity uniforms for expectant officers. Let us not lose sight of what this represents; dignity, inclusion and recognition that a woman can embrace motherhood while continuing to serve her country.

I am really looking forward to seeing us build on this progress across the entire public service, with stronger maternity and parental support, safe and conducive working environments, childcare support and policies that protect women, especially mothers. I also encourage the private and corporate sectors to continually ask, what more can we do to support women through pregnancy, motherhood and their return to work?

This video by Nana Owiti is refreshing because it shows firsthand what such a seemingly simple change can mean. To someone else, it may just be another uniform but to an expectant police officer wearing it, it means comfort, dignity, recognition and the freedom of not having to choose between service and motherhood.
