Congratulations to our August Foldscoper of the Month, Arnold Abakah! 🎉

Arnold holds a BSc in Biochemistry from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana. He graduated with First Class Honors. Arnold’s research interests span genomics, neuroimmunology, and computational biology. His first research experience was as a student research intern at the Human Genetics and Genomics Lab at KNUST.

We asked Arnold what was his first exposure to the microscopic world and he answered: “I was first exposed to microscopy during my time as a Laboratory Supervisor in high school, where I oversaw lab sessions and set up apparatus for practical lessons in chemistry and biology.
I can recall the thrill of observing the cells within an onion slice under our school microscope. Unfortunately, the limited number of equipment meant long queues of up to ten students just for a glimpse. Never mind that as a perk of my position, I got to practice its use more freely than my peers.”.

Arnold shared that the first time he used a Foldscope was at a training for facilitators for outreach activities - he was able to view a nematode!

For Arnold, Foldscope is a revolutionary tool for democratizing science that allows him to share his passion for science with the next generation of scientists, especially of those in resource-limited settings.
