En tant que rapporteuse pour mon groupe sur cette résolution relative à la violence des gangs en Haïti, j’ai déposé plusieurs amendements visant à mettre en lumière les responsabilités historiques dans la crise que traverse le pays. J’y dénonce notamment l’implication de la société militaire privée américaine Vectus Global, fondée par l’ancien patron de Blackwater, dans la mort de plus de 1 200 Haïtien·nes, ainsi que l’impact des coupes budgétaires de l’USAID dans l’aggravation de la crise humanitaire.

On ne peut traiter la situation en Haïti sans rappeler les facteurs structurels de la crise : le colonialisme français, l’occupation étasunienne, la rançon coloniale de plus de 30 milliards d’euros imposée par la France, que de nombreuses ONG haïtiennes et des responsables onusiens appellent aujourd’hui à rembourser, ou encore le changement climatique, qui affecte Haïti, troisième pays au monde le plus exposé aux risques climatiques de long terme.

As rapporteur for my group on this resolution concerning gang violence in Haiti, I have tabled several amendments aimed at shedding light on the historical responsibilities behind the crisis the country is facing. In particular, I denounce the involvement of the American private military company Vectus Global, founded by the former head of Blackwater, in the deaths of more than 1,200 Haitians, as well as the impact of USAID budget cuts in worsening the humanitarian crisis.

The situation in Haiti cannot be addressed without recalling the structural factors behind the crisis: French colonialism, the U.S. occupation, the colonial indemnity of more than €30 billion imposed by France, which many Haitian NGOs and UN officials are now calling to be repaid, and climate change, which affects Haiti, the third most exposed country in the world to long-term climate risks.

Trump’s account posted a video about voting.

At the very end, for a couple of seconds, a completely different video appears - one depicting politicians as animals (Trump as a lion, Biden as a monkey, the Obamas as monkeys, etc.).

I don’t think they meant to post that second video at all.

It looks like someone screen recorded the first video, and the platform autoplayed the next video in the feed before they stopped recording.

Then they were careless and didn’t cut that second video out.

This happens to me constantly as a content creator - if you don’t trim your screen recordings using an editor, whatever autoplays next gets tacked onto the end.

Try screen recording a video on your phone right now.

Watch what happens when it ends.

The second video was made by someone who was thoughtless at best and racist at worst.

It’s also a random video from the internet.

I can’t read minds.

But based on what I can see: the most likely explanation is that this was a careless mistake - and the only reason anyone’s seen that one second frame from the video is because it got accidentally tacked onto the end of a screen recording.

My original reaction was “wtf?” - same as yours, probably.

Then I slowed down, calmed down, did the research, and this is what I found.

That said, given the obvious sensitivity of depicting any black person as a monkey - even unintentionally - it’s a good idea for Trump to make a statement taking accountability for careless management of his account.

Would be nice to see from a leader.
