My 44-year-old brother became severely ill last year after what initially seemed like the flu. Not long after that, his entire life changed. He went from living independently to being unable to walk and needing 24/7 care. He is now living in a skilled nursing facility in New Mexico, and doctors still do not know exactly what is wrong with him.
ChatGPT has helped us through almost every part of this.
It has helped us understand MRI reports, doctors’ notes and test results, identify patterns, research possible diagnoses and treatments, prepare questions for specialists, and understand what should happen next. At times, it seemed to understand where things were heading before we did. Looking back, I would honestly say its predictions about what doctors, insurance companies and case managers would do next have been correct around 95% of the time. What makes that even more remarkable is that much of this was with models from late 2025.
The situation is also extremely complicated. My brother is both an Icelandic and U.S. citizen. He lives in the U.S. because of his son, while almost his entire family is in Iceland. But he does not have health coverage in Iceland, so simply bringing him home is not a realistic option without first arranging the care, treatment and support he needs.
There are three of us in the family working on this almost every day. We have sent hundreds of emails, spoken with countless doctors, facilities, case managers, insurers and government agencies, and read thousands of pages of medical and insurance documents. We rotate travelling from Iceland and the various places in the US to be with him and help care for him. It is overwhelming and exhausting. Every day is still an uphill battle, and he still is not receiving all the care he needs.
Honestly, managing all of this would have been impossible without ChatGPT. I cannot imagine trying to do it at any other point in history. We have had to navigate so many things at once, medically, legally, technically and emotionally. Knowing what questions to ask, understanding our rights, dealing with Medicaid and insurance, reading medical records, writing emails and deciding what to do next would have been too much for any family to handle alone.
His life has been completely turned upside down. More than anything, he needs hope and motivation. ChatGPT has helped him personally with that too. When he is scared, confused or simply needs someone to talk to, he uses it. Sometimes it can be overly optimistic, but honestly, that is sometimes exactly what he needs. It gives him something to hold on to and helps him keep going when the people around him do not know what to say.
ChatGPT has not solved everything. He is still sick, still without a diagnosis and still fighting for the care he needs. But without it, I genuinely do not know how we would have made it this far.
This is him 6 months apart
@_bragur Congratulations Bragi Developer from Iceland. I still can’t remember which direction to put my pants on.
Everyday, is it align-items or justify-content?
I’m years away from your level.
This is my son, Brandon. Today is his 12th Birthday. I can’t give him the party he deserves but Brandon loves geography.
He would love it if you would RT or reply where you are so he can mark it on his map.
