David Swensen managed Yale's endowment for 36 year
He turned $1B into $40B
16.1% annualized returns over 20 years — no other endowment came close
He also left behind a reading list that explains exactly how he thought about money🧵
“I bought Balkrishna Industries at Rs.100 crore Market cap. We sold it at 1,200 crores market cap in 2 years. Today it is trading at 50,000 Crores market cap.”
“We bought at 1 PE with 40% ROE. But we were kids to understand power of compounding.”

2 weeks ago, we had the privilege of hosting @Sanjay__Bakshi for a 2.5-day Behavioral Economics Workshop in #Nepal. Many of us had learned from his blog for years, and now to learn from him in person was truly special.
One of a kind!
We’re deeply grateful, Sir! 🙏

Heartfelt gratitude to Prof. @Sanjay__Bakshi for conducting a brilliant workshop for Value Investing Society Nepal. A masterclass in Behavioral Economics, rich with centuries of wisdom. Humbled.
Thank you, Sir, for this powerful push forward for our Society. Grateful to you 🙏
I had a wonderful time spending three days with fifty value investors in Nepal and learned much about Nepali businesses and their stock market, which they described as illiquid and highly manipulated—similar to the Indian market in the early 1990s. They also displayed a hunger to learn from India and its value investors.
An example of survivorship bias: you tend to ask ChatGPT questions about things outside your specialty; it infers your personality based on questions you ask not those you don't ask.
Some more examples that I share with students. Doing the DuPont analysis in the head makes sense as one encounters various business models as a customer. For example, margins and capital turns in fine dining vs. fast food. Or the economics of a low-cost carrier working hard towards faster turnarounds vs a full-service airline.
“To be successful at anything, you don't have to be special. You just have to be what most people aren't…consistent, determined and willing to work for it. No shortcuts."
