My heart is with the Jewish community in Belleville following the horrific shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue as people gathered for Yom Kippur.

Antisemitic violence has no place in Canada. No one should ever fear for their safety while gathering to pray.

We must stand together against hate and violence. Those responsible must be arrested and held fully accountable.

Keeping the injured police officer, their family, the Jewish community, and all first responders who showed courage in my thoughts.

Sierra Beverly was just 12 years old.

She loved animals, made friends easily, and embraced the arts. She had her whole life ahead of her.

In 2022, that future was taken from her in a devastating head-on crash.

Police had been told the driver was drinking. His vehicle was filled with open beer cans. He was travelling 90 km/h in a 50 km/h zone when he slammed head-on into Sierra’s family’s car.

Sierra’s life was ended in an instant.

Her family, however, was left to carry the loss every day since, a life sentence of grief that no judge can reduce, no appeal can erase, and no passage of time can undo.

And the person responsible?

Two years of house arrest.

He can work. Go to school. Attend church. Go to medical appointments. He can continue living his life while Sierra’s family is left to mourn the life she never got to live.

The Crown sought four years in prison.

The court chose house arrest, with the judge citing “colonialism” in explaining the sentence.

I am heartbroken for Sierra’s family and angry that this is what our justice system has delivered.

This isn’t justice.

Sierra deserved better. Her family deserved better. Canadians deserve better. #cdnpoli

Less than 24 hours after getting out on bail, he was back in trouble.

This is what happens when Liberal catch-and-release policies let repeat violent offenders back onto the streets.
