@Kirwithdot I think it’s interesting that this world shares some features with ours while discarding others. Ralsei should theoretically be unaffected by human gender roles, but he is still forced into a specific societal role because of a status assigned to him at birth.

@Kirwithdot I think in this specific case his status as a Darkner overrides his status as a male. He is destined to be in a servile position no matter what. But you could project the Lightner/Darkner dynamic onto a gender dichotomy (although I’m not sure if that’s what Toby had in mind).
