Listen to our students: #BlackAtKState
As a land grant institution founded on stolen lands, at which 78% of students & 77% of tenured/tenure track faculty are white (I’m part of that statistic/problem) K-State is enmeshed in systemic racism.
We gotta do more than carry signs.
My freshman year we created a group me of black students so we could know people once we moved in. White students found the group me, sent racial slurs, and deleted us out of the group me that WE created. #BlackAtKState
Being called out in a class to educate my white peers on common stereotypes about black people. When I refused to answer, SHE ASKED MY PEERS TO ENLIGHTEN ME ABOUT STEREOTYPES THAT BLACK PEOPLE FACE. I really can’t make this stuff up... #BlackAtKstate
Nooses on trees. White supremacy posters. Nazi sign vandalism. The “Kansas Kool Kids.”
My advisor called me an “overachiever” for pursuing two degrees and encouraged me to drop one because “no one has ever succeeded at this before.” Well guess who succeeded? #BlackAtKstate
