[Ch 1] It was an unusually warm summer ... wait, how am I supposed to fit a biography in here?!? | Phylomedicine graduate researcher @TempleUniv | Evolution ...
#Evol2019 talks that were recorded (at request of presenter) are on our YouTube channel, archived posters on FigShare. Links to both here: https://t.co/sgWMaEkYrM 175 of ~350 videos are up & the rest will be in the next coupe of days. Thanks to @GeorgeSandler_ who ran this!
So many great talks still left at #Evol2019; I would completely understand if you can't make it to mine😁Here's what I'd tell you: You can reliably estimate positional allelic preferences for your species of interest with just a sequence alignment! Catch me during ☕️or after w/Qs
.@ChroniAntonia is inferring tumor migration with biogeography: tumors = heterogeneous pops of evolving clones; such evo+metastasis can be analogous to spp evo... she conn. biogeo processes to most metastasis mechanisms 😵 biogeo methods as good as specialized tools 🎉 #Evol20192

.@cathyqqtao in Phylogenetic Methods 3 at #Evol2019: 1) analytical method developed to get variance of time estimates under RelTime framework 2) utilize calibration densities in rel->absolute times 3) improve unreliable calibrations leveraging interactions with others!!! < 🤯
@erikachung182@AcademicChatter my prob with a tablet (or any device) is all the distractions that come with it... I know there are tools to help shut all those things out, but with paper I don't even need to make the choice to enable "productivity tools" 😅 just my 2¢; "@LHLogan1: everyone is different!" 👍
.@srwisotsky at #Evol2019 warns us that (occasionally) silent but deadly synonymous changes occur and that syn rate variation matters! might get false signals of positive selection 😯
Hi! 👋 I have a talk at #Evol2019 tomorrow (Monday) at 12:15pm in Ballroom BC. Have you ever wondered why you should use the the Yes Synonymous Rate Variation option on @hyphy_software or https://t.co/jvx9tbCW5K? come see me talk about it!
@StOnSoftware@art_poon @DanielBolnick @pastramimachine @ASNAmNat certainly. I do appreciate the value of pair programming, but it does *take* more time than it *saves* often. e.g., sadly I can only do one thing at a time; if I am the observer/reviewer in a pair, I am spending time I would have otherwise been coding the other project...
@StOnSoftware@art_poon @DanielBolnick @pastramimachine @ASNAmNat "if the other parts of the work are not organized so as to make it inefficient" < this is key, but it assumes inefficiencies/wasted time already exist... not saying it doesn't in academia, but just differently than in industry, so optimizing this may be tougher
@DanielBolnick 2/2 which adds the necessity (and surprisingly previously unmentioned) for GOOD docs. if people can't read your code, they can't really review it 😅I imagine this is where difficulties incorporating a code review, etc into a paper review process will only _start_ to emerge
@DanielBolnick There are automated tools out there like Scrutinizer than can help point out poor coding choices, but doesn't _really_ help bug finding 😑that's where good tests come in; then you need *people* to code review... 1/2
