What kind of bigotry is this, where a mosque on Race Course faces an eviction threat while PM Modi participates in an event steeped in religious symbolism? Is the Constitution merely a document to be invoked when convenient? How brazenly can the idea of equal respect for all faiths be undermined? This is deeply disturbing and utterly dismaying. When USCIRF repeatedly flags concerns over religious freedom in India, shouldn’t we be asking what happened to our secular/pluralist soul?
From Jagtar Singh Johal's prolonged detention to concerns over minority rights, voter-list revisions, and mosque demolitions, these are some of the issues shaping the debate around religious freedom and human rights in India.
Two years of government in Jammu & Kashmir ; promises, performance and public expectations. What has changed on the ground? From constitutional promises to unemployment and basic amenities, I write for @GreaterKashmir
When a senior bureaucrat says, “Yeh JKPSC nahi hai jahaan setting karke aa gaye,” it raises a serious question that cannot simply be ignored.
Does this remark imply that there is a perception of manipulation in JKPSC recruitment? If so, where is that perception coming from?
Thousands of aspirants spend years preparing for competitive examinations. Many come from financially constrained families, overcome immense personal hardships, and navigate a reservation system while hoping that their hard work will eventually secure them a fair opportunity.
If there is any credible suspicion of manipulation, an impartial probe is essential. Aspirants deserve transparency, accountability and justice. https://t.co/qTEvcDerMQ
The alleged brutal murder of 70-year-old Jani Begum in Parigam, Pulwama, with her throat reportedly slit inside her own home, is deeply disturbing and deserves the strongest condemnation. Where is our society heading when an elderly woman is not safe even within the four walls of her home? Have we lost our humanity and conscience? J&K Police must conduct a swift, thorough and impartial investigation, identify the perpetrator, and ensure the harshest punishment under law. Such barbaric acts must never be allowed to go unpunished. @JmuKmrPolice
A newborn’s body found abandoned in a forest in Dunaroo, Keller, Shopian, with reports that dogs were dragging the infant. What kind of society are we becoming when even a newborn is denied the dignity of life and death? Why is humanity fading while crime and moral decay seem to be rising in Kashmir? Who is accountable for this disturbing decline? Police must investigate urgently, establish the facts, and ensure accountability. Silence cannot become our society’s conscience.
Adil Farooq Bhat and Imran Nazir Najar have been acquitted in the 2021 Srinagar grenade-blast case, with the court flagging serious investigative lapses. But who will return the years they lost? Who will compensate their families for the mental agony, social stigma, financial burden and repeated crackdowns they may have endured? Who answers for the fear, humiliation and uncertainty that become a family’s daily reality? If the prosecution fails to establish guilt, should the accused alone bear the cost of a painful process? This is the harsh reality many innocent people fear in Kashmir.
“To put it another way, for every 1,000 Muslim electors in the draft roll, 318 were flagged for “logical discrepancies”, while the corresponding figure for the rest of the non-Muslim electors was 197 per 1,000.
This means that Muslims were 60% more likely to be marked for “logical discrepancies” than non-Muslims.”

Bureaucracy is meant to serve, not intimidate or harass. Harassing juniors, humiliating subordinates, and especially mistreating women under the guise of authority is unacceptable. Seniority is a responsibility, not a license to bully. Respect, dignity, and accountability must define every workplace. Power should empower, never exploit. #WorkplaceDignity
Unfortunately, instead of focusing on how Kashmiris are being disenfranchised, including members the Kashmiri bureaucratic fraternity, the National Conference has once again turned the issue into aplatform for pushing its statehood agenda. The larger concern here is the erosion of democratic rights, dignity, and representation of the people of Kashmir, which deserves serious and undivided attention. This is not the time for political point-scoring or narrow party interests. The National Conference, using it’s 50 MLA mandate, must rise above electoral calculations and stand up firmly to the BJP, prioritising the genuine concerns and aspirations of Kashmiris above everything else.
The BJP/RSS, through the Waqf Board, is pushing the idea of issuing uniform sermons in advance. But what they really want is not uniformity , it is obedience in advance. They want to dictate what should be said and heard. We strongly condemn this attempt to control religious expression and freedom.
Every or any political establishment that seeks to uniform-ise X,Y,Z structures in society are basically Fascists in nature. Uniformity means dictatorship, enforcing of one idea, while diversity means reprsents justice, equality, fraternity and plurality .
At this rate the next decade we will see the complete extermination of farmland from Srinagar. The rate of pollution, increasing temp, vanishing of lakes & everything put together will disproportionately increase so much so that, the city will become unlivable. And amidst all this, we are selling off the land to the outsiders for commercial purposes and there seems no restriction/regulation in order for prevention of such impending disasters.
I’d like to thank every single person who came out today for this protest. I'd also like to thank the millions of people who showed support in their own way at 3pm. Thank you to the leaders of INDIA bloc, all the workers of the Congress party and workers of the INDIA bloc.
Today was a very important day because we needed to show the government that the people of India are not going to be intimidated. You cannot beat us, threaten us, frighten us. We will not accept being bullied.
I was wondering where the cowards of the RSS who were beating the young children day before yesterday were. Where were those people? Because I didn’t see them.
When we are standing there and when the people of India are standing there, why don’t you come out? Why don’t you wear your little scarves and come out and see what happens?
Because you’re essentially, like the Prime Minister of India, bullies. You cannot stand up. You can only use power to fight.
So, it’s very heartening to see what happened. I’m proud of everybody. Everybody worked like a team.
As I said in my press conference, there are no parallel protests. It’s one protest, and it’s a protest where everybody is standing together. Every single person is going to stand against these killers of our Constitution, these killers of our democracy. And we’re not going to back down.
I’d also like to thank everybody from civil society organisations who came, supported us. We value your support, and we love all of you.
Thank you all for coming out and defending the idea of India, the idea of the Constitution, the idea of our democracy.
I’m extremely proud of every single person who came out on the streets. Thank you.
Khuddar mere shehr ka faagon se mar gaya
Rashan jo aa raha tha wo afsar ke ghar gaya
Chadti rahi mazaar pe chadar to beshumar

The suffering of protestors in Delhi deserves scrutiny, solidarity, and justice in its own right. But solidarity should not come at the cost of erasing Kashmir's distinct and deeply painful history. One injustice does not diminish another, equally, one cannot invoke Kashmir merely as a metaphor for every instance of state repression elsewhere.
To call what is happening in India today the “Kashmirisation of India” is, therefore, both a misnomer and an oxymoron. It risks turning decades of Kashmiri suffering into a political slogan while overlooking the specificity of what Kashmiris have endured.
