Martinelli gave Arsenal some incredible moments. The noise and celebrations when he scored that late winner against City at the Emirates in 2023, the bedlam in the away end at Stamford Bridge and last season’s equaliser against City. But that moment in the Bernabeu, for anyone who was lucky enough to be there, was so, so special. As was what followed afterwards. His chant rung through the streets of Madrid all night after that game.

A superb servant to the club, who gave everything while he was here. He felt like an honorary Hale End graduate.

Hope he gets the chance to come back to the Emirates at some point.

🚨 In the latter stages of the window, Andrea Berta and Arsenal came under significant pressure to sell.

Arsenal entered the summer with an ambitious sales plan, but as some of the bigger deals failed to materialise, the club widened its search for potential departures, particularly players who could generate maximum profit.

Multiple sources told The Athletic that without significant sales, Arsenal could have been at risk of breaching UEFA’s Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) rules. The club must also comply with UEFA’s Football Earnings Rule, which places limits on losses.

Arsenal have spent more than £600m on new players over the past three seasons, leaving their net spend around £400m, even with Gabriel Martinelli’s impending club-record sale. Meanwhile, revenues have grown significantly, but so have transfer fees, wages and operating costs, which exceeded £200m in 2024/25.

Arsenal have denied any risk of breaching UEFA’s financial regulations, and it remains difficult for outsiders to accurately determine a club’s position because key financial figures are not publicly available in the detail required.

There is also an interesting contradiction: despite suggestions Arsenal were close to their financial limits, they appeared willing to spend heavily on Vinícius Júnior or Julián Álvarez. It suggests the club may have been prepared to push closer to the limit for the right player.

What is clear is that Arsenal’s huge revenue growth has been accompanied by rapidly increasing costs, both from competing at the highest level and from the success achieved on the pitch.

It was against this backdrop that Myles Lewis-Skelly was offered to Manchester United and Chelsea by an intermediary. The news caused shock within the squad and an even stronger reaction among supporters.

Arsenal insist they did not directly offer Lewis-Skelly, while sources at both Manchester United and Chelsea maintain that the player was proposed to them. United had strong interest in the 19-year-old and believed Arsenal could consider selling for the right price.

But Lewis-Skelly’s position was always clear: he wanted to establish himself at his boyhood club. He never wanted to leave Arsenal and did not explore a move away from the Emirates.
