Even by the standards of a country ranking 157 of 180 nations in the World Press Freedom Index, the reaction of the authorities to the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ is beyond extraordinary. The public response to that imaginative prank should have signalled to them a deep discontent, even distress, among young people. Instead, as The Indian Express reported, it was framed as jeopardising the country’s ‘national security’ and ‘posing a threat to the sovereignty of India.’ Decades ago, the Malaysian lawyer and poet Cecil Rajendra wrote this brilliant poem that captures the idiocy of it better than any pompous editorialising could (not that our ‘mainstream’ media would dare do even that much).
The Chief Justice of India’s thoughts on journalists, RTI activists, freedom of speech and activists in general in the largest democracy in the world.
In case there are any illusions that the Supreme Court is still independent or intent on giving justice.
Archives | Surya Kant faces allegations of grave misconduct. In 2012, a real-estate agent accused the judge of having participated in illegal property dealings involving undervaluation and cash transactions worth several crores. In 2017, a prisoner in Punjab filed a complaint listing eight cases heard by Kant, and alleged that the judge had accepted bribes to grant bail in these.

STORY | Unemployed 'youngsters like cockroaches' become media, activists; attack system: CJI
Likening some unemployed youngsters to cockroaches, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Friday said they go on to "become" media, social media and RTI activists and start attacking the system.
The comments came while a bench of CJI Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi was pulling up a lawyer for "pursuing" a senior advocate designation. It said there were already "parasites" in society who attack the system and asked the petitioner whether he wanted to join hands with them.
"The entire world may be eligible to become senior (advocate), but at least you are not entitled," the bench told the petitioner's lawyer.
A visibly anguished CJI observed that if the Delhi High Court were to confer senior advocate designation upon the petitioner, the apex court would set that aside, seeing his professional conduct.
The CJI also referred to the kind of language used by the petitioner on Facebook.

This kind of a statement should directly lead to impeachment of the judge. As responsible citizens, we cannot allow judicial standards and ethics to fall to such pits. The dignity of the chair and institution is at stake here. Leader of Opposition @RahulGandhi should condemn this statement and consider moving an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice. Someone should speak up for our courts!
Hey @JioCare
You have the worst app and customer service. It’s been a week of no internet service and I have been unable to lodge a service request. Automated messages and automated calls, with no option to raise a complaint! Frustrating as hell!
@JioCare I do hope you are right because I am cancelling the subscription if it is not resolved. I hope you don’t expect me to pay for the service that you didn’t provide.
It’s been a week and I am losing my patience. My mother has none by now.
Chandigarh Press Club mourns the passing of legendary photographer Raghu Rai.
India has lost not just a photographer, but an institution in himself. For generations of journalists, he showed that one powerful frame could say more than pages filled with words.
Rest in peace
The Election Commission of India is sending instructions to officials to book notorious “trouble makers”, to identify potential “intimidators” and pick them up as preventive detention! Yesterday ECI also shared a secret list of 1000+ names it called “trouble makers” of which most were TMC MLAs and candidate.
