Russians: "Biolabs in Ukraine!"
Also Russians: Unleashed the literal plague on their own city because they broke the test tube containing live bacteria in, yes, a biolab.
This painting by Mykola Ivasiuk, completed in 1912, illustrates my favorite scene from my forthcoming book about Ukraine’s historical fate.
Bohdan Khmelnytsky, leader of the Ukrainian Cossack uprising of 1648, makes a triumphant entry into Kyiv.
These were the days before Christmas in the first year of a terrible war. Allied with the Crimean Tatars, the Cossacks had inflicted a series of crushing defeats on the forces of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
Khmelnytsky had effectively proclaimed autonomy across vast stretches of Ukrainian land under the authority of the Zaporozhian Host, with himself at its head as hetman of the Cossack army.
Having ended the campaign of 1648 with a truce with the crown, he and his army entered Kyiv with banners and cannons through the Golden Gate, which had stood in ruins for 400 years since the Mongol invasion.
The ancient capital itself was only beginning to recover from centuries of decline. Kyiv’s residents greeted Khmelnytsky with cannon salutes and cheers; students of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy sang hymns to him, and the Patriarch of Jerusalem blessed the hetman in St. Sophia Cathedral for the battles ahead as the ruler of an emerging Cossack Ukraine.
It was a tragic and terrible war. Blood flowed across Ukrainian land: fierce battles, atrocities and mass executions on both sides, horrific pogroms against Jews, famine, devastation and death.
We must remember all of it -- the triumph of that moment and the terrible suffering of the war. Ukraine’s path to statehood and independence has been long and painful, and even today, we could lose that independence again.
Jared Kushner is complaining about fake news that's allegedly been written about him. Rest assured, this piece is 100% factual. https://t.co/IgFDFYO1PQ
This is such a shocking kind of evil that it almost left me speechless when I heard about it for the first time. The amount of pain russia unleashes on Ukraine is unfathomable. Please read‼️
Gerhard Schröder is once again monetizing his access to Putin: Schröder joined the board of Hyperglobus, a German-owned retailer that still operates (and actively expands) in Russia. A few days after Metro was expropriated by Putin, Hyperglobus has bought itself life insurance.
