Today is our late dad’s birthday. Frank O’Shea was a Second World War veteran, husband, father, engineer. Somebody I could always call for help on a story.

Looking out from home in Toronto with gratitude this Sunday: I started reporting at Global News in Toronto 38 years ago today after leaving CBC. Thanks to all the fellow reporters, photogs, editors, bosses, colleagues, viewers, friends, and my family for their support and indulgence.

In just shy of 38 years a reporter on the street with Global News in Toronto, I can say with certainty that the Italian-Canadian couple and their son we spent time with today in Downsview treated us with the kindest hospitality I’ve experienced in my work. Parking on their driveway, workspace for editing the story out back of the house, food and drinks, bathroom access, and on and on.. If I write a book, they’re in the book. Thanks F and F. Just passed 40 uninterrupted years as a full time TV reporter starting with CBC News and then Global. (Worked in radio and papers before that, too.)

Got the full time job during the ☘️ shamrock summit with Mulroney and Reagan. Free trade deal came next.

Grateful for my good fortune.

NEW: Despite presenting a path to balancing the budget for 2026-27, Ontario's Progressive Conservative party is announcing $40 billion in new government spending as part of its re-election platform.

Some of those announcements, roughly $20 billion, is contingent on Trump's tariffs.

The party says "As a result of prudent planning, higher revenues due to economic growth and smart borrowing policies, Ontario’s finances are in better shape today than they have been in decades."

They wouldn't say whether the bulk of this would be deficit spending. (It is)
