To be fair, the original works (Iliad and Oydssey) are internally aware that war is hell and that this stands in contrast with the culture of heroism and hounding glory.

In the Iliad, Hector visits his infant son one last time before going to fight Achilles, and as he is in full war gear, wearing a helmet, his baby boy is frightened by him and starts crying. By the wartime morals of ancient Greece, Hector is dressed and is acting nobly but the story makes it pretty clear that he is in a miserable position. He knows Troy will fall, his wife will be raped and enslaved, and his child will probably die. And he still goes, and fights, and loses, because running is unthinkable. And then, at the farewell, his boy cries upon seeing him because he does not recognize his father.

In the Odyssesy, when Odysseus meets Achilles in the underworld, he tells him that none of the glory was worth dying for. He laments that he would rather be a slave and alive, than the king of all the dead.

The fact that a culture glorifies war never meant that individuals - especially educated individuals - could not see it for what it is.
