NEW: U.S. Ambassador to Israel Jack Lew and his deputy, Stephanie Hallett, blocked an internal USAID cable in early 2024 that warned northern Gaza had become an “apocalyptic wasteland,” with bodies left in cars and human remains on the roads, according to Reuters.

The diplomats argued the cable “lacked balance,” though it was based on UN humanitarian fact-finding missions and represented what had been widely reported in the media, sources told Reuters.

Three former U.S. officials told Reuters the descriptions were “unusually graphic” and would have attracted senior U.S. officials’ attention if widely circulated within Joe Biden’s administration.

Humanitarian officials said their expertise was sidelined, and the administration instead continued backing Israel to the hilt.

Palestinian-American child Mohammed Ibrahim, 16, was freed today after nine months of Israeli imprisonment without charge. Journalist Jasper Nathaniel, who has been a major advocate for and reported extensively on the teen’s release, says Sen. Chris Van Hollen and his staff “fought hard for this, including behind the scenes.”

Van Hollen has also applied sustained pressure across a series of human-rights cases and foreign-policy issues in the past year:

▪️ He flew to El Salvador in mid-April 2025 after Trump’s DHS illegally deported Maryland man Kilmar Abrego Garcia, intervening directly to gain access and press for his lawful return. Garcia was subsequently brought back to the United States.

▪️ He has co-led legislation to block U.S. arms sales to the UAE over its support for Sudan’s genocidal Rapid Support Forces.

▪️ He publicly pressed for oversight of Trump’s UAE-linked crypto dealings in May 2025, warning of foreign-influence risks and conflicts of interest.

▪️ He was also among the only senators sharply critical of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation scheme (that led to mass killings of Palestinians) and the organization’s lack of transparency — part of the sustained scrutiny the organization faced before its recent shutdown.

▪️ During a summer delegation trip to Israel, the West Bank, Jordan and Egypt, Van Hollen urged action to curb settler violence, expand humanitarian access to Gaza, and enforce U.S. human-rights conditions tied to security assistance to Israel.

In September, TikTok appointed Erica Mindel, a former Israeli military instructor turned public‑policy manager to control how “hate speech” is defined and policed on TikTok. Her resume is basically being a habara agent for Israel: Two years in the IDF Armored Corps, policy work with the U.S. State Department, and a Zionist advocacy track record. Seems pretty neutral for content moderation!

Now she’s effectively deciding which voices are heard and which are silenced on one of the world’s largest social media apps.
