నా పేరు వివేక్ శర్మ. వయస్సు 32 ఏళ్లు.
​ఎవరైనా "ఏం చేస్తారు?" అని అడిగితే, "ఒక చిన్న కిరాణా కొట్టు నడుపుతాను" అని బదులిస్తాను. నా సమాధానం విని చాలామంది నవ్వుతారు, మరికొందరు ఆశ్చర్యపోతారు. ఎందుకంటే నా గురించి వారికి తెలిసిన ఇంకో నిజం ఒకటుంది.
​నేను IIT బాంబేలో కంప్యూటర్ సైన్స్‌ గోల్డ్ మెడలిస్ట్‌ను.
​నా బీరువాలో ఇప్పటికీ ఒక ఆఫర్ లెటర్ భద్రంగా ఉంది. అది శాన్ ఫ్రాన్సిస్కోకు చెందిన ఒక కంపెనీ ఇచ్చిన ఆహ్వానం. ఏడాదికి $240,000 (సుమారు ₹1.6 కోట్లు) జీతం. ఆ ఉత్తరాన్ని నేను చింపలేదు... కానీ ఆ ఉద్యోగంలో ఎప్పుడూ చేరలేదు.
​ఆరంభం: పేదరికం - కలల ప్రయాణం
​మాది కాన్పూర్‌లోని కిద్వాయ్ నగర్. రెండు గదుల చిన్న రేకుల ఇల్లు. నాన్న రైల్వే క్లర్క్, అమ్మ ట్యూషన్లు చెప్పేది. ఇద్దరి సంపాదన కలిపితే నెలకు ₹10,000 వచ్చేది.
​మా నాన్న ఎప్పుడూ ఒకటే చెప్పేవారు: "నాన్నా, నువ్వు ఎంత చదవాలనుకుంటే అంత చదువు. డబ్బు గురించి చింతించకు."
​నేను కష్టపడి చదివాను. 10వ తరగతిలో 95%, ఇంటర్‌లో 97% సాధించాను. కోటాలో కోచింగ్ కోసం నాన్న తన ప్రావిడెంట్ ఫండ్ డబ్బు తీశారు, అమ్మ తన బంగారు గాజులు అమ్మేసింది. ఆ త్యాగాల ఫలితంగా నాకు IIT బాంబేలో సీటు వచ్చింది. ఆ రోజు మా నాన్న వీధి మొత్తం మిఠాయిలు పంచారు. అమ్మ కళ్ళల్లో నీళ్లు తిరుగుతుండగా, "నా కొడుకు అమెరికా వెళ్తాడు" అని మురిసిపోయింది.
​మలుపు: ఒక కఠినమైన ఛాలెంజ్
​IITలో చదువుతున్నప్పుడే గూగుల్ ఇంటర్న్‌షిప్ చేశాను. వచ్చిన మొదటి స్టైపెండ్‌తో అమ్మకు వాషింగ్ మెషీన్ కొన్నాను. ఫైనల్ ఇయర్ ముగిసేసరికి అమెరికా కంపెనీలో భారీ జీతంతో ఉద్యోగం వచ్చింది. ఆగస్టు 2016లో నేను విమానం ఎక్కాలి.
​కానీ విధి మరోలా ఉంది.
​మార్చి నెలలో నాన్నకు గుండెపోటు వచ్చింది. ఆపరేషన్ కోసం ₹3 లక్షలు ఖర్చయ్యాయి. మే నెలలో అమ్మకు రోమ్ము క్యాన్సర్ (Stage 2) అని తేలింది. ఉన్న డబ్బులన్నీ ఆసుపత్రుల పాలయ్యాయి. ఇల్లు తాకట్టు పెట్టాల్సిన పరిస్థితి.
​ఒకవైపు నా చేతిలో ఆఫర్ లెటర్ ఉంది... మరోవైపు ఆసుపత్రి బిల్లులు ఉన్నాయి. విమానం ఎక్కి వెళ్లిపోతే నా కల నెరవేరుతుంది. కానీ వెనుక ఉన్న నా తల్లిదండ్రులను చూసుకునే వారు ఎవరు? ఆ రాత్రి మేడ మీద కూర్చుని ఆకాశంలో వెళ్తున్న విమానాలను చూస్తూ ఆలోచించాను.
​మరుసటి రోజు నా వీసా ఇంటర్వ్యూను రద్దు చేసుకున్నాను. కంపెనీకి మెయిల్ ఇచ్చాను: "కుటుంబ ఆరోగ్య కారణాల వల్ల నేను రాలేకపోతున్నాను."
​స్నేహితులు నన్ను పిచ్చోడు అన్నారు. అంత పెద్ద జీతాన్ని వదులుకున్నందుకు తిట్టారు.
​కిరాణా కొట్టు - కొత్త జీవితం
​కాన్పూర్‌లోనే నెలకు ₹35,000 జీతంతో ఒక చిన్న ఉద్యోగంలో చేరాను. పగలు ఆఫీసు, సాయంత్రం ఆసుపత్రి. అమ్మ కీమోథెరపీ వల్ల జుట్టు కోల్పోతుంటే చూసి తట్టుకోలేకపోయేవాడిని. రెండేళ్లు గడిచాక అమ్మ కోలుకుంది, నాన్న ఆరోగ్యం కుదుటపడింది. కానీ మా కంపెనీ మూతపడటంతో నా ఉద్యోగం పోయింది.
​బెంగళూరు నుంచి ₹18 లక్షల ప్యాకేజీతో ఆఫర్ వచ్చింది. కానీ నా తల్లిదండ్రులను వదిలి వెళ్లడం నాకు ఇష్టం లేదు. అందుకే నా ఇంటి కిందే ఒక చిన్న షాపు తెరిచాను: "శర్మ జనరల్ స్టోర్."
​IIT గోల్డ్ మెడలిస్ట్ బియ్యం, పప్పులు అమ్ముతుంటే చూసి అందరూ ఎగతాళి చేశారు. కానీ నాకు తెలుసు, నేను చేస్తుంది దేనికోసమో. పగలు షాపులో ఉండటం, రాత్రిపూట ఫ్రీలాన్స్ కోడింగ్ చేయడం మొదలుపెట్టాను. ఖాళీ సమయంలో పేద పిల్లలకు కోడింగ్ నేర్పించేవాడిని.
​విజయం అంటే జీతం కాదు... సంతృప్తి!
​2022లో నేను నేర్పించిన ఒక విద్యార్థి నేషనల్ ఒలింపియాడ్ గెలిచాడు. "IIT గ్రాడ్యుయేట్ కిరాణా కొట్టు నడుపుతూ విద్యార్థులను తీర్చిదిద్దుతున్నాడు" అనే వార్త వైరల్ అయ్యింది. అదే సమయంలో పాత అమెరికా కంపెనీ CTO నాకు మెయిల్ చేశారు. వారు ఇండియాలో ఎడ్యుకేషన్ ప్రాజెక్ట్ మొదలుపెడుతున్నారని, నన్ను లీడ్ చేయమని అడిగారు.
​ఇప్పుడు నా జీవితం ఇలా సాగుతోంది:
​ఉదయం: కిరాణా షాపు
​మధ్యాహ్నం: పిల్లలకు బోధన
​సాయంత్రం: గ్లోబల్ టెక్ టీమ్‌తో పని

​పోయిన నెలలో నాన్న 68వ పుట్టినరోజు వేడుక జరిగింది. `ఆ రోజు నాన్న కన్నీళ్లతో ఇలా అన్నారు: "నా కొడుకు అమెరికా వెళ్లలేదు... కానీ నాకు అవసరమైనప్పుడు నా పక్కనే ఉన్నాడు.`
​అమ్మ ఒకసారి అడిగింది, "ఆ పాత ఆఫర్ లెటర్ ఇంకా ఎందుకు దాచావు?" అని.
"నేను దేన్ని వదిలేసి వచ్చానో గుర్తుంచుకోవడానికి" అన్నాను నవ్వుతూ.
అమ్మ నవ్వి, `నువ్వు దేన్ని వదలలేదు వివేక్... నువ్వు నీ బాధ్యతను ఎంచుకున్నావు` అంది.
​నాకు ఎటువంటి బాధ లేదు. ఎందుకంటే, నా తల్లిదండ్రులకు ప్రతిరోజూ ఉదయం కాఫీ నేనే ఇస్తాను. అమ్మ ఆరోగ్యం నేను దగ్గరుండి చూసుకుంటాను. `ఈ ఆనందాన్ని ఏ కోటి రూపాయల జీతమూ ఇవ్వలేదు.`
​చాలామంది అడుగుతుంటారు: "IIT చదివి కిరాణా కొట్టు ఎందుకు?" అని.
​నా దగ్గర ఒకటే సమాధానం ఉంది:
`నా తల్లిదండ్రులే నా పాలిట అతిపెద్ద కంపెనీ... నేను దానికి ఫుల్ టైమ్ CEOని!" ❤️`

They are not going to tell you they are running out of time. That is not how they were built. They will wave you off, say they are fine, tell you not to worry, because they spent a lifetime protecting you from hard truths and they are still doing it now.

The repeated stories are not a malfunction. They are what mattered most to them, they are trying to pass something to you before they go, so receive it.

One day you will be mid-sentence and suddenly remember the exact way they laughed, and it will stop you cold, and you would trade almost anything to hear it one more time in real time, not just in memory.

That day is coming, you do not know when.

So call, not when you have time, because you do not have time, nobody does, but call anyway, visit anyway, sit in the quiet with them and let it mean something.

Give them your presence while they can still feel it, not later.
