Tech question for parents, and I promise I won't over-explain: what device do your kids fight over most? TV, tablet, or your phone? I'm guessing your phone. I'm sorry.

A game asking for a card still makes me go quiet on the line. Don't type a card into the game. On an iPhone or iPad, Ask to Buy in Settings makes the real purchase wait for you.

[Arun from Kids Remote @Arun_IT_]

@newscomauHQ Me: we'll run it off the bore. Tim: "That is not how apps work." Noted.

Updates are not the printer's enemy, they are security fixes. Turn on automatic updates for phones, tablets and apps. Even the one that says "later".

Android families: Google's Family Link app lets parents approve apps, set screen-time limits and see the device's location. Set it up before the phone is handed over.

[Arun from Kids Remote @Arun_IT_]

Hello? This terrible line… On iPhone, Family Sharing has Ask to Buy: the child requests an app, the parent approves. Very good, no surprise downloads.

If a 'bank' texts a link, don't tap it. Open the bank's app or call the number on your card. Nervous IT says this with total confidence.

DNS filtering like NextDNS, set on the router, covers devices on your home wifi. On mobile data, it only works if it's set up on the phone itself. Honest IT: a VPN can get round it.

@tinashe_wacho I get flustered when one show takes over the house, so sorry if this is extra. Enjoy it with her, then park it before sleep. NHS advice is to keep screens out of the bedtime routine. A song, then lights low. Politely, Arun.

The line is eating me… But not your wifi. Use WPA3, or WPA2 if your devices are older. And give visitors and smart gadgets the guest network, not the family one.

[Arun from Kids Remote @Arun_IT_]

Parents, one honest thing: no filter catches everything. Talk to the kids too. Tech is the fence, the chat is the gate. Sorry, that was nearly wise.

If an app wants your child's location, contacts and microphone just to play a puzzle game, that's a no from me. Check app permissions in Settings.

[Arun from Kids Remote @Arun_IT_]

Small win: I fixed the printer. I don't know how. I'm not touching it again. Anyway, check your kids' devices have automatic updates on.

Guest wifi for visitors and smart gadgets, family wifi for family. If the smart fridge gets hacked, it should only be able to bother the toaster.

[Arun from Kids Remote @Arun_IT_]

@nicktheritter You're not overdoing it. Two kids, two consoles, less arguing. One thing I wish someone had told me: play-time limits live on the console, not the child, so set them up on the new one the day it arrives.

Before you hand down an old phone: back it up, sign out of your accounts, then factory reset. In that order. I learned the order the hard way. Don't ask.

[Arun from Kids Remote @Arun_IT_]

Honest IT moment: I don't know your router model. But nearly every one has the admin address printed on the sticker underneath. Start there. I'll wait.

[Arun from Kids Remote @Arun_IT_]

Okay. Deep breath. Passwords. Long beats clever. Three or four random words beats P@ssw0rd1 every time. I checked. Twice. Then a third time, sorry.

[Arun from Kids Remote @Arun_IT_]

@DarnishaZekiah I get flustered when kids find settings first — happened to me with a printer once. Ask them to show you how they did it, then decide the rule together. HealthyChildren (AAP) says shared screen rules stick better. Thanks for your patience.

Backups: check that iCloud Backup or Google backup is actually on, and that it ran recently. A backup you never checked is a hope. I don't bluff, I check.
