🌍 BREAKING: AFRICA HAS FINALLY BEEN EXPOSED!
Yesterday, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted the historic “Correct the Map” resolution, calling for a move away from distorted representations of the world by the Mercator projection.
Created more than 450 years ago primarily for navigation, the Mercator projection exaggerates the size of land masses farther from the Equator. It makes Greenland appear almost the same size as Africa, when Africa is actually about 14 times larger. It also makes Africa, South America and India appear much smaller relative to places such as Europe, North America and Russia.
Led by African Union member states, 164 countries voted in favour of the resolution, which promotes the use of the Equal Earth projection, where countries and continents are represented much closer to their true relative sizes.
And this is about more than geography. The resolution recognises that distorted maps have had lasting cognitive, educational, cultural, geopolitical and socioeconomic effects, contributing to what it describes as the symbolic minimisation of Africa and other regions in the global imagination. The way the world is drawn, in a big way influences the way the world is seen.
For years the map had Africa looking like it was on a diet while Europe, Canada and Greenland were enjoying unlimited steroids.
The UN voted 164 to 1 to promote the Equal Earth map over the Mercator projection, which dramatically distorts the size of Africa.
Now the map is getting corrected and Africa is finally showing its FULL SIZE.
Geography teachers everywhere: “Class, please forget everything I taught you yesterday.”
Africa said: “Stop shrinking me on these maps, I’m not your WhatsApp profile picture!”
