We further find that coupling of heart and neural rhythms increases when engaged in a cognitive task.

Anxiety modulates this task-evoked increase such that it appears engaging in a cognitive task insulates one from the deleterious effects of anxiety on heart-brain coupling.

Together, the findings suggest a potential bridge from interoception → alteroception → social inference: a theory of body upon which a theory of mind may be constructed.
