India is the world's largest tractor market. Every year, Indian farmers buy more tractors than any other country on Earth. In 2023, that fleet ran almost entirely on diesel, and the average farmer who owned one spent tens of thousands of rupees a year simply to keep it running. An automotive engineer who had spent twelve years building vehicles at Toyota and Volvo decided that was the problem worth spending the next decade on.

Anoop Srikantaswamy studied at Cornell University and built his career across Toyota Kirloskar Motor, nine years at Volvo Group, then Accenture, and briefly as Director of R&D Programs at Ola. By the time he left Ola in 2023, he had seen the global automotive industry from the inside for over a decade. And the gap he kept returning to was a specific one: the world's largest tractor market had no credible electric alternative designed for Indian farming conditions. Global manufacturers were building for European and American farms, not for the fields of Punjab and Vidarbha.

In August 2023, he co-founded Moonrider in Bengaluru with Ravi Kulkarni, his former Volvo colleague of six years, with one stated mission: make farming so economically viable and sustainable that more people would want to return to it.

What they built is not an adaptation of a foreign design. Moonrider's electric tractors, available in 27HP, 50HP, and 75HP variants, carry an in-house battery pack, the world's first oil-cooled thermal solution for a tractor battery, and a category-first active balancer technology. The system integrates with a mobile app, receives over-the-air updates, and supports platooning and autonomous operations. Concept to prototype took under 40 days. The technology is patented in India.

Moonrider has signed MoUs for 6,000 tractor deliveries over three years, raised $8.38 million from investors including pi Ventures and Micelio, and has begun customer deliveries.

The largest tractor market in the world has been waiting for something like this. It just needed someone who had spent a decade inside the global automotive industry, understood exactly what was missing, and came home to build it.
