First day back was pretty great! Even I did spend the day making my classroom look like a disaster... Hoping this is an indication of a pretty great year to follow π
I feel like this needs to be used with every lesson we do. Giving strategic tasks, asking strategic questions, and being strategic about what evidence of learning we take to best help our students learn. It's all about strategy!

Not jumping straight to the formulas. I'd like to have them work through it on their own to come up with a formula that could work. I LOVED the first video of the kids finding volume differently and charting it. Great way to lead to student discovered formula!

Random thought here: I love how each chapter we all find different things that were "key points" to us. Its ALL important and when all our thoughts are put together we cover everything. I just thought that was pretty cool :D #JacksonMath
Oh, and also finding area of shapes that are not perfect rectangles. Even when using grids behind the shape it can be hard to understand the value of half of a square as half of a unit.

The vocabulary for one since each type of measuring has is own set of vocabulary to learn. As well as the area/perimeter confusion. The 2 get mixed up frequently with students. Along with miscounting of the exact number of squares when looking at certain models.

I think making sure to give that hands-on learning with manipulatives initially. Especially with area, perimeter, and volume. Also using those other strategies for problem solving for example open number lines with elapsed time.

This is EXACTLY what I was going to say. I feel like the biggest struggle I have had is trying to correct misconceptions. That and just the large amount of vocabulary.

I used the root "rect" this past year telling kiddos it means "right" and that blew their minds, but also helped with the understanding of what a rectangle actually is. #JacksonMath
I had never thought about that aspect of the raised ink making it technically 3D. I sat here forever trying to figure out it could be taught truly in 2D... #JacksonMath

How technically a 2D shape only has length and width, so whenever an attribute block or pattern block is used, they are technically 3D shapes.
I think that attention to precise vocabulary. All rectangles are NOT squares, only some. All squares however ARE rectangles. Also the understanding of "at least". Those are some of the biggest things I've seen with kiddos. Those quadrilaterals are crazy for them. #JacksonMath
I think use of more varied manipulatives and making sure each kid has their own set of tools to work with. Also this book has made clear that I should really be reinforcing those math practices. They are more than just colorful posters on the wall ;)
