The attacks on Ethiopia’s Orthodox churches in Oromia recently and sadly ongoing for years are shocking, and officials should be doing more to stop it. It is specific targeting of these Orthodox communities.

But it’s not clear to me that “Islamists” are doing this, but rather extremist Oromo nationalists. Maybe some might be Islamists as well, but this seems timed more for national destabilization because of elections and to inflame tensions.

In the June 18, 2022 Tole Kebele (Gimbi, West Wollega) massacre: As per the preliminary report, 554+ Amhara civilians killed (455 named in AAA report).
Majority were Amhara Muslims (Mohammed, Ahmed, Hussein, Fatima etc.). 48 massacred at Jafar Mosque. Sheikh Mohammed Ali lost 8 family members.
No mercy: 15-day-old infant Nuredin Mohammed to 100+ year-old Aba Hajji Hussein. Pregnant women’s wombs cut open. Entire families (10–31 members) wiped out. Brutal killings over 8+ hours across 10 villages.
Same pattern in Arsi (Amhara Christians targeted, churches burned).

It’s about hunting Amharas wherever they are found.
