Recently, I met with Circassian-American Professor Lidia Zhygwin. It was an incredible opportunity to discuss the future of the #NorthCaucasus. It serves as a vital reminder that as long as the North Caucasus remains under Russian #occupation, #Russia will function as an #empire and continue to undermine international security.
The agenda of Russian liberals like @navalnylive, @khodorkovsky_en and @vkaramurza, which promotes the democratization of Russia without decolonization, is complete nonsense. Their agenda does not represent the peoples of the North Caucasus.
#Decolonization of Russia must come first.
I had the honor of meeting Professor Jean-François Ratelle from the University of Ottawa during my time in #Toronto. His expertise on the #Caucasus region is truly masterclass. Prof. @RatelleJean, thank you for a brilliant speech!
Today, I attended the "Responding to Rupture: #Russia, Global Power Shifts, and Democracy" conference in #Toronto. It was a great honor to meet Member of Parliament and Shadow Minister of National Defence @jamesbezan . Thank you for your insightful remarks and dedication to these critical global issues.
On May 12, 1997, Russia and Chechnya signed the #Treaty of Peace and Principles of Relations between the Russian Federation and the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, officially ending the First Russian-Chechen War. Both parties pledged to renounce the use of force. However, Russia violated this commitment and invaded Grozny in 1999, proving once again that it cannot be trusted and does not respect the agreements it signs. The world once abandoned Chechnya and is now paying the price for allowing international norms to be violated with impunity. Ceding Ukrainian territories now would mean a surrender of sovereignty and the further encouragement of Russia's expansionist ambitions. The world must learn from past mistakes: Russia’s aspirations for dominance must not be legitimized.
This Treaty remains a key document in the history of relations between the #ChechenRepublic of Ichkeria (CRI) and the Russian Federation. Francis Boyle, a professor of international law at the University of Illinois, argues in his work that by signing a peace treaty with the CRI, Russia de facto recognized it as a sovereign state. Consequently, the international community should also view the republic as an independent entity.
Today, the Russian authorities and many political circles, including Russian liberals, remain silent about the existence of this treaty. However, this document is officially published on the UN website.
By violating the terms of the agreement, #Russia launched a second military aggression in 1999, once again demonstrating the methods of state terror to the world. The conflict between Russia and Chechnya is an interstate confrontation, and the presence of a hundred-thousand-strong Russian army on the territory of the CRI constitutes a direct #occupation.

Today, April 21, #Chechens worldwide gather in spirit to honor the memory of the first President of the #Chechen Republic of Ichkeria (ChRI), Dzhokhar #Dudaev. It has been exactly thirty years since that day in 1996 when the leader of independent #Chechnya was assassinated by a Russian missile strike. He was killed in a targeted attack while on the phone, engaged in negotiations to end the war and secure a peaceful resolution.
His name lives on as a symbol of dignity, the fight for freedom, and loyalty to his people.
In a powerful act of solidarity, a memorial plaque dedicated to Dudaev was unveiled today in #Lviv. The ceremony was attended by the city’s Mayor, @AndriySadovyi. Among the guests of honor was the Prime Minister of the ChRI, @AkhmedZakayev who presented Mayor Sadovyi with the "Order of Friendship" state award as a gesture of respect and gratitude.
Members of the ChRI Armed Forces were also in attendance, including Commander-in-Chief Abdulhakim Azhiev.
We extend our deepest gratitude to #Ukraine for the unwavering support and for honoring the memory of our first President. In turn, we stand firmly with Ukraine in their own fight for sovereignty. Our shared history of resistance binds us together, and we remain committed to supporting the Ukrainian people in their quest for a just and lasting peace.
@AndriySadovyi, thank you!
Glory to Ukraine! 🇺🇦

Congratulations to the people of Hungary on the outcome of the elections. This moment reflects the voice, will, and democratic choice of the nation.
To the newly elected President, @magyarpeterMP, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations. Leadership carries both great responsibility and great opportunity to unite, to listen, and to serve every citizen with dignity and fairness.
I also hope that relations between #Hungary and the #Chechen Republic of Ichkeria will continue to develop in a spirit of mutual respect and cooperation. Strengthening dialogue and collaboration can contribute to safeguarding security in #Europe and building shared prosperity for our peoples.
May your presidency bring stability and progress to #Hungary.
#Democracy thrives when people engage, decide, and shape their future - and today is a testament to that. 🇭🇺
The Chechens became the first victims of Russia’s imperial violence in the history of modern Russia. Few understand this better than Aset Sabb, whose people have struggled for freedom from Russia for generations.
On March 8, 2005, Russian federal forces killed the popularly elected Third President of the #Chechen Republic of Ichkeria (ChRI), Aslan Maskhadov.
Maskhadov’s election was held under the observation of OSCE representatives, and he was recognized by the international community as the ChRI’s legitimate head of state. His presidency included several high-profile diplomatic visits to countries like #Georgia, #Azerbaijan, #Russia, and the #UnitedKingdom. It was Maskhadov who signed the 1997 Peace Treaty with Russian President Boris Yeltsin, a document in which both nations recognized each other as subjects of international law.
As a dedicated diplomat, Maskhadov believed the conflict between the ChRI and Russia could only be resolved through peaceful, political means. However, the Kremlin "Chekists" including Yeltsin, Patrushev, Rushailo, Ivanov, and Putin chose a different path, launching the devastating Second Russo-Chechen War.
Even after the conflict began, Maskhadov declared a unilateral ceasefire in 2005 as a gesture of goodwill to restart negotiations. Instead of a diplomatic response, #Russia tracked him down and killed him.
President Maskhadov lived with dignity and left with dignity. He is our hero.

In early March 2026, Vladimir Putin condemned the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling it a « cynical violation of international law » and « human moral principles. »
While Putin positions himself as a defender of state sovereignty, history tells a much bloodier story regarding Russia’s own record. Between 1996 and 2013, Russia systematically eliminated five successive presidents of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria - despite their repeated efforts to reach a diplomatic settlement.
1996: Dzhokhar Dudayev -> repeatedly called for direct talks with Yeltsin; killed by a missile while on a satellite phone.
2004: Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev-> assassinated by GRU agents in Qatar via a car bomb. Russia ignored Qatari sovereignty to carry out the hit.
2005: Aslan Maskhadov -> the most moderate voice; he signed the 1997 peace treaty and was killed while offering a new ceasefire.
2006: Abdul-Khalim Sadulayev-> Continued the call for a political solution based on international law; killed in a special operation.
2013: Dokka Umarov-> died via poisoning by Russian intelligence.
The most glaring proof of Russian hypocrisy lies in its treatment of the 1997 Peace Treaty.
Dialogue Ignored: President Aslan Maskhadov was not a « terrorist » by international standards; he was a democratically elected leader who sought a peaceful and political resolution of the conflict between Chechnya the Russian Federation.
Even after the Second Russian-Chechen War began, Maskhadov issued a unilateral ceasefire in 2005 as a gesture of goodwill to restart negotiations. Russia responded by locating and killing him.
#Russia currently claims that killing a foreign leader destabilizes global order. Yet, Russia’s strategy in #Chechnya was founded on the deliberate decapitation of the political leadership to ensure no one was left to negotiate with.

The Deportation of the Vainakh Peoples (Operation Lentil)
The deportation, codenamed Operation Lentil (Chechevitza), remains one of the most brutal instances of ethnic cleansing in Soviet history. Conducted during the height of World War II, the operation targeted the #Chechen and #Ingush populations under the collective and largely fabricated accusation of collaboration with Nazi Germany.
Key Historical Phases
* Under the direct supervision of Lavrentiy Beria, approximately 100,000 NKVD-NKGB troops were deployed to the region. The operation began on Red Army Day to ensure the population was gathered for celebrations, making the round-up more efficient.
* Families were packed into unheated freight cars with minimal food or water. The journey to Central Asia lasted several weeks; those who fell ill or could not keep up were often executed on the spot or left to die of exposure.
* Upon arrival in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, the Vainakh people were classified as « special settlers. » They were subjected to a regime of forced labor, restricted movement, and severe malnutrition.
The demographic toll was catastrophic. While estimates vary, it is widely recognized that between 30% and 50% of the entire population perished within the first few years. Beyond the loss of life, the Soviet state attempted to erase the Vainakh identity by:
1. Abolishing the Chechen-Ingush ASSR and dividing its territory.
2. Renaming towns and villages with Russian names.
3. Destroying cultural heritage, including ancient towers, cemeteries, and manuscripts.
It was not until 1957, during the « Khrushchev Thaw, » that the survivors were allowed to return to their ancestral lands, though they faced decades of continued discrimination and property disputes upon their arrival.
In 2004, the European Parliament officially recognized the deportation of 1944 as an act of genocide, citing the intentional creation of conditions designed to bring about the partial destruction of the ethnic group.

We respectfully bring to the attention of the #UnitedNations the case of Movsar #Movlaev, a Chechen national facing extradition from the Republic of #Kazakhstan to the #Russian Federation.
Mr. Movlaev faces a real and well-documented risk of #persecution, #torture, and inhuman treatment if returned. The extradition request relies on politically motivated charges fabricated by the authorities of the Russian Federation due to his #Chechen origin.
Any forced return of Mr. Movlaev would constitute a violation of Kazakhstan’s international obligations, in particular the principle of non-refoulement under international human rights law. We respectfully urge the relevant @UN mechanisms to intervene and call on the authorities of #Kazakhstan to halt the extradition of Movsar Movlaev and ensure his access to effective international protection.

We respectfully draw the attention of the #UnitedNations to the case of Zelimkhan Murtazov, a #Chechen national who has been held for over one month in the transit zone of #Astana International Airport, #Kazakhstan.
Mr. Murtazov is at real risk of persecution, torture, and inhuman treatment if returned to Russia. His continued confinement without access to #asylum procedures or the possibility to travel to a third safe country raises serious concerns under international human rights law, including the principle of non-refoulement.
We urge the competent UN mechanisms to intervene and call on the authorities of #Kazakhstan to immediately ensure his access to international #protection and prevent any forced return that would place his life and safety at risk.

The two Russian-Chechen wars were marked by mass human rights violations, war crimes, and acts that meet the legal definition of #genocide. These crimes remain legally relevant regardless of any change of power in #Moscow. Any attempt to frame Chechnya’s future as part of a “democratic, reformed Russia” without recognizing the right of the Chechen Republic of #Ichkeria to #independence constitutes a continuation of imperial governance and a denial of the Chechen people’s will. The #Chechen issue cannot be postponed or resolved “within” #Russia. It must be addressed as a separate international legal case #supportchechnya
