This week I want to pay tribute to one of the most overlooked things in Pokémon history.

In 1998, the actual Pokémon TCG shipped as a Game Boy game. Not the RPG everyone remembers, the card game itself, real rules and all, in your pocket.

Before it was ever a real card, this Meowth only existed inside a Game Boy.

It debuted in the 1998 TCG game, later got printed as a holo in 2000, and slipped into the game's box instead of a sealed pack. Which is exactly why the gem rate is a brutal 1.16%.

A card that escaped a video game and became a grail.

If you asked me for the single card that captures spooky Pokemon, I wouldn't hesitate.

A tiny bit of light, surrounded by the dark, Gengar right there behind the friendliest face in the franchise. You even get a little peek of ekans and parasect in the background.

High pop and modern, sure. Iconic nonetheless.

One of my favorite little details in the 1998 Game Boy TCG game: the cartridge exclusive booster packs.

Colosseum, Evolution, Mystery, Laboratory. Each with its own art and its own series of cards, and none of them ever existed as a real product.

Pixel art way ahead of its time.
