twitter update (i guess??)
tl;dr - trying to budget my time better and spend that time offline. I'm just trying to engage with better habits overall. Twitter/socmed is the lowest of all priorities so it gets cut first.
If you need something, you know where to find me.
I should really know better than to ask for more info on twitter.
Everyone has kneejerk reactions that are mostly rude or defensive and you can tell they didn't read the context, just the headline.
I'll just email the company I wanted info on and ask them.
@mystier2011 For that first image with the book, I think they drew the character and generated the book+hand, then adjusted it to connect them. Even artists that struggle with hands wouldn't draw them like that, especially with a perfectly rendered book. It's too jarring.
If you're not used to spotting signs of AI in art, that's understandable. Sometimes it's knowing the difference between a human drawing poorly and an AI guesstimating pixels.
The hand in this image could be either.
I'm 99% confident about the AI usage, but about 85% confident that this is the lead/only artist on the team.

Still a little concerning.
@mystier2011 That's a fair critique. However, as I said before, this artist has a good level of skill when it comes to character art. They understand lighting, line, etc. It's very easy to touch up a piece post-AI assistance.
There's enough inconsistencies for me to be suspicious.
These absolutely COULD be mistakes/intentional things done by the artist, and that's why I wanted to put this out there and ask if anyone had more info to share.
These reek of AI to me, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.
You can also check things like lighting. Where is the light coming from? Is there light on objects that makes zero sense?
Even when it's touched up, careful inspection can spot inconsistences.
The light on these buildings is from two different angles.
I'm kind of surprised no one's talking about the AI generation being used in Reverse 1999.
Not sure how much of the game is AI generated, at least one of the artists doing the promo art is using it and touching up the art later albeit not THAT well.
the other two are also using photos that have been painted/passed through a filter for the backgrounds (which VNs have done for ages), but I don't see any evidence of AI. It's JUST the artist I linked as far as I can tell.
just to be clear, I don't think this kind of thing should really dissuade anyone from playing or enjoying, I just think people should be aware so they have the choice.
I'm also only seeing it for ONE artist, and I can confidently identify three different ones.
@nijotsubaki If you put AI tools in the hands of an artist, they will touch up a lot of the mistakes, but rarely all of them.
An example of what to look for is things like stairs. You can argue this is for the "surrealism" but I doubt it.
But game studios rarely have one artist do EVERYTHING (even with AI generation) so someone else may be responsible for BG art and such.
Half the BG images appear to be doctored photos, or photos that have been painted over anyway.
The artist in question appears to be more of a character/concept artist than someone who does complete images. Most inconsistencies are in their backgrounds and it's especially apparent if you scroll back in time through their pieces.
