🇯🇵🤝🇳🇵🤝🇺🇳Strengthening recovery, restoring services, rebuilding hope.
With support from the Government of Japan, @UNDP#Nepal, together with @unhabitatnepal and local partners, handed over the first of 10 prefabricated community service buildings in earthquake-affected Western Nepal.
The new facility in Nalgad Municipality, Jajarkot, will help restore essential public services and strengthen local governance following the 2023 earthquake.
From ward offices and immunization centres to police posts, these community spaces are supporting resilient recovery while enhancing disaster preparedness for the future.
As Japan and Nepal mark 70 years of diplomatic relations, this partnership reflects a shared commitment to helping communities recover stronger and more resilient.

Across Karnali, Lumbini, and Sudurpashchim, local journalists are using storytelling to push disaster preparedness into public debate—highlighting risks, amplifying community voices, and holding decision-makers accountable before the next crisis hits.
Supported by the @EUinNepal through @eu_echo, @UNDP’s SUPER-II project is helping shift disaster risk reduction from reactive response to proactive preparedness with local stories and community voices driving the conversation on resilience.
Preparedness doesn’t start when disaster hits. It starts with awareness, conversations, accountability, and stories that make people pay attention.

The fire simulation in Birendranagar was a testament to the joint disaster preparedness and the shared commitment to sharing available resources to respond to future emergencies.
For most residents of Thati village, fire trucks were something they had only heard about on the radio or seen on screens. Located 31 km north of Birendranagar, Surkhet—the capital of Karnali Province—the community has had to wait hours for a fire truck to reach the village in the event of a fire incident.
Last week, however, this narrative changed. Birendranagar Municipality, in collaboration with the @eu_echo-supported Strengthening Urban Preparedness, Earthquake Preparedness and Response in the Western Region of Nepal (SUPER-II) project—implemented by a @UNDP-led consortium with @UNICEF, @UN_Women, and Handicap International—organized a fire simulation exercise actively engaging volunteers and community members.
The exercise featured an orientation on household firefighting, with a particular focus on LPG-related fires, followed by a fire control simulation. A total of 86 individuals actively participated in the hands-on practice exercise.

Media advocacy plays a critical role in shaping disaster risk reduction policies and holding decision-makers accountable.
The @eu_echo funded Strengthening Urban Preparedness, Earthquake Preparedness and Response in the Western Region of Nepal (SUPER-II) project, implemented by a @UNDP-led consortium with @unicef_nepal, @unwomennepal and @HI_federation brought media advocacy to the forefront of disaster risk reduction in western #Nepal.
From Birendranagar to Nepalgunj to Dhangadhi, local journalists amplified voices from the ground spotlighting gaps in preparedness and pushing for stronger action from provincial and local governments.
Their stories sparked real conversations. Policymakers, elected leaders, civil society, first responders, and communities—including women, youth, persons with disabilities, and LGBTQI+ individuals—came together for critical dialogue and accountability.
And this is just the beginning.
Six journalists will now take these stories further through opinion pieces, calling for greater awareness, stronger coordination, and increased investment to better prepare for future disasters.

When buildings fall, services shouldn’t.
After the 2023 Jajarkot earthquake, damaged government offices meant disrupted access to essential services for thousands.
With support from the Government of Japan, @UNDP's Livelihoods Improvement and Disaster Resilience Enhancement project is working hand-in-hand with local governments to construct 10 prefabricated office buildings across Jajarkot and Rukum West districts—restoring access to security, health, vital registration, and administrative services.
🛠️ Nearing completion, these facilities will directly serve 9,000+ people and strengthen service delivery for nearly 150,000 more.
Because recovery isn’t just about rebuilding structures, it’s about restoring trust, dignity, and access.

Once the canal is restored, I’ll be able to irrigate my field and grow enough food for my family.” – Amrita Oli, farmer, Jajarkot.
After the 2023 earthquake damaged irrigation systems across Jajarkot and Rukum West, communities are rebuilding the lifelines of their farms.

🆕 I just published a short reflection to capture this moment of democratic renewal in Asia-Pacific, as millions across the region head into elections.
The visibility is often on voting day, but the hard work of election commissions; voter educators; setting up logistics and accountable systems to count, for dispute resolution; to keep trust in information - these are the quiet preps that we @UNDP support.
From Bangladesh and Nepal to the Philippines and the Pacific, with @UNDPasiapac partners @EU_Commission@SwissDevCoop@dfat@MFATNZ@NorwayMFA@SweMFA@MofaJapan_en@FCDOGovUK and others, we make it count!

Strengthening Local Resilience in Jajarkot and Rukum West
@UNDP's Jajarkot Earthquake Recovery Project supported by the Government of Japan, organized a series of intensive search and rescue orientation programmes across five rural/municipalities in Jajarkot and Rukum West districts.
Through realistic earthquake, flood/landslide, and household fire simulations, local DRR volunteers and police officers stepped into the role of first responders, learning how to act swiftly and effectively when disaster strikes.
The training strengthened their capacity with:
🔹Essential search and rescue principles
🔹Practical emergency response techniques
🔹Methods to safely rescue injured persons
🔹Critical life-saving skills like CPR
Every skill learned is a step toward stronger, safer communities. Together, we are not just preparing for disasters, we are shaping a future of resilience and hope.
Nepal marks the 28th Earthquake Safety Day today & provincial governments Sudurpashchim, Karnali, and Lumbini are organising important initiatives to strengthen preparedness and reduce disaster risks.
