Jack Cohen (Jacob Edward Kohen), the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland, built the Tesco empire from a single market stall.

His daughter 'Dame' Shirley Porter led the biggest local government corruption scandal in modern British history.

Porter and her sister Sybil Irene Kreitman inherited half of their father's fortune each.

In the 1980s, Porter became the Conservative leader of Westminster City Council.

She orchestrated the 'Homes for Votes' scandal, unlawfully rigging local housing policies and selling off council homes in key marginal voting areas— to pack them with affluent voters likely to vote Conservative.

Timeline for Porter:

- Resigned from Westminster City Council in 1993 as public exposure of the scandal peaked.

- Ran away to 'israel' with her husband in 1994 to live in a luxury seaside penthouse in 'Herzliya Pituach' (Al-Haram and Ijlil villages, Jaffa, occupied Palestine).

- Finalised three major private share transfers to clear her 5.5 million Tesco shares, sold her luxury Hyde Park flat, and sold her country cottage. (Investigators famously joked that the most valuable physical asset they managed to seize on British soil was a decorative gold toilet seat from her abandoned property.)

- Funnelled over £70 million out of Britain into a web of offshore shield companies and secret trusts based in Guernsey, the British Virgin Islands, Switzerland, and global assets in the US.

- Routed this hidden wealth directly to her sister, her children (including daughter Linda Streit), and her grandchildren (including Joanna Landau).

- Swore an affidavit under oath in 2002 claiming she only had £300,000 left worldwide, then immediately departed on a luxury £90,000 cruise around the Pacific Ocean. (The chutzpah)

But in 2003, her lies collapsed.

Her son John Porter led a boardroom coup that ousted Redbus Interhouse founder Cliff Stanford.

Stanford hired private investigators who were hunting for corporate misconduct but accidentally found documents that mapped out Porter's hidden assets across two British Virgin Islands shell companies (Whitecoast Investments Ltd and Sunset Trading Corporation).

They also proved she was secretly bankrolling her son with tens of millions.

In one email she wrote to her son: 'You appeared to be totally surprised unless, of course, you've inherited my genes and know how to lie?'

Stanford reported the documents to Westminster City Council and the BBC.

Confronted with the proof, Porter was forced to settle with the council for £12.3 million in 2004, insulating the rest of her massive fortune abroad.

With her settlement paid and the threat of asset seizure gone, she bought a luxury Mayfair flat in 2006 to split her time with London, though she primarily remained a coloniser in her seaside penthouse.

Joanna Landau and Linda Streit actively manage the family's capital through institutional leadership in 'israel'.

Shirley Porter died 2.5 weeks ago on 2 May 2026.
