When I heard about Senator Graham’s death last night, the first thing I thought about was not all the things he said and did in service of Donald Trump. I thought of the time before Donald Trump when he was a brother to Senator John McCain.
A time when senators from different parties could fight about politics and still be friends. A time when a conservative Republican from South Carolina could say of my father: “If you can’t admire Joe Biden as a person, you’ve got a problem. He’s the nicest person I’ve ever met in politics. As good a man as God ever created.”
That is the Senator Graham I will remember today. Not because I have forgotten what came after. Because in that memory there is hope. Hope for a country where brothers can fight like hell over policy and still share a meal, and a laugh, and the loss of the people they love.
I will choose to remember the time before Trump. Because I believe in an America after Trump.
Q: How can someone like you speak to me as a Black man and say my vote matters when historically it never has?
@JamesTalarico: They wouldn't be trying so hard to stop you from voting if your vote didn't matter. Voter suppression is proof that your vote has tremendous power. It is increasingly harder to vote here in Texas by design so the people in power never have to face accountability.
I don't think you should feel that you owe loyalty to any party. You have a loyalty to yourself and your community. If one party is taking you for granted, you have a right to push back against them.
Joe Rogan: Why are you a Democrat?
.@JamesTalarico: My mother met my birth father, who had a drinking problem that sometimes led to being violent. My mom decided right then and there that she was leaving. She found a little apartment in East Austin and worked double duty at a hotel to provide for us. She saw Texas Democrats like Ann Richards, people who fought for the little guy. That was the classic Democratic Party. I asked my mom what we were, and she was like, ‘We're Democrats, because Democrats fight for the people.’ Our historical legacy is the party that fights for the little guy. That's why I'm a Democrat.
We’re getting calls about polls being closed. They are closed because we do not have elections today. Kentucky votes next year. You cannot vote today in Kentucky for the mayor of New York City or the Governor of Virginia. Sorry.
🚨OH MY GOD: CBS asked Texas Rep. Ann Johnson if Democrats “ran from the fight.” Her response was epic:
“No, abandoning your job is going to Cancun during a deadly freeze.”
Then she went nuclear:
“When Trump asked Georgia GOP to ‘find 11,000 votes,’ they said no.
When he asked Texas GOP to steal 5 seats - they said, ‘Does July work for you?’”
