Today is the day after World Suicide Prevention day. We lose someone to suicide every 40 seconds. And for everyone that dies by suicide 20 more attempt it.
5. Thank God I have no shame in taking meds (currently not on any but have been for depression) and no shame in discussing my health, seeing a therapist, reevaluating where I am yearly with my psychiatrist who prescribes. Right now we are discussing watching anxiety because
4. decision made more agonizing by not wanting to see yourself as giving into a mood or being weak or (gasp) being a victim of Big Pharma. Most people with depression and anxiety (like me) have had it fluctuate over the years and itโs very hard to pin down what I need or donโt.
3. Depression isnโt an exact science. It can be situational. It can be hormonal. It can be temporary. Meds in certain cases can be used and then gone off of. Some mental health issues require a more strict approach with medication being needed for life. Itโs a private, personal
2. Saying โI just think anti-depressants are over-prescribedโ is a tired argument that isnโt sophisticated. Itโs a subtle way to disparage anti-depressants and plants doubt that people on them are just trying to take some easy way out.
Depression isnโt sadness. Itโs a disease not a mood. Antidepressants do NOT numb pain. They take people from below sea level back to sea level so that they can properly live with the normal amount of human pain and sadness.

For someone with depression the pressure to "get better" can be overwhelming. Asking, with huge hope "are you getting better" can be crushing. If the answer is no-it can be incredibly tough to be honest. We simply don't want to let people down. So we often lie.
