Why doing the right thing becomes exceptional ?
Public service is about having the courage to put public interest above self interest, commitment above comfort.

What stops babus from being Tukaram Mundhe or Ashok Khemka? - India Today https://t.co/42qmP55A48
This Independence Day, I am thinking about freedom, not only as the freedom of a nation, but as the freedom of every citizen to live, participate and belong.
Yesterday, I had the honour of receiving the Javed Abidi Public Policy Award for Universal Design. It brought back many memories of Javed. Javed was not merely an advocate. He was a force. A passionate man with a missionary zeal. He led the disability rights movement with the conviction that accessibility is not charity, inclusion is not benevolence, and rights are not something to be requested politely.
Rights have to be claimed. Systems have to change.
My own journey began not in a policy office, but with an accident that changed my life. At 22, instead of joining the bureaucracy, I suddenly found myself rejected by the "babus" as a road accident left me with a spinal cord injury and as a wheelchair user. I was rejected and excluded by society too.
I discovered, very painfully, that the greatest barriers in my life were not my disability or my body. They were attitudes, attitudes that created inaccessible institutions, limiting assumptions and policies that simply did not see me.
It left me with a question that has guided my life: Why should anyone have to fight every day to move out of the house, learn, work, travel, participate and simply belong?
That question led to Swabhiman. And that question also led me to https://t.co/Lrg4Tp36Eo led me to work for inclusive education, accessibility, disability rights, better policies, visibility in our population data and, above all, a society where disability is not pushed to the margins of welfare but placed at the centre of rights, development and governance.
India won freedom 79 years ago. But the journey towards a truly free India struggles. True freedom is achieved when no citizen is invisible, excluded or left behind.
A truly independent India is one where every person, regardless of disability, can live with dignity, equality and opportunity.
Where public spaces are designed for everyone.
Where education is inclusive by default.
Where technology opens doors rather than creates barriers.
Where policies see every citizen.
Where difference is not a reason for exclusion, but celebrated as part of the diversity of India.
Javed would probably have celebrated today with us, and then asked the inevitable question: “Now tell me Sruti, what next?”
So, on this Independence Day Javed, the question should no longer be:
“How do we make this accessible for persons with disabilities?"
The question must begin with:
“Why is it not designed for everyone in the first place?”
That is the spirit of inclusion by default. Because accessibility is not an afterthought. It is the foundation of equality.
This Independence Day, let us build an India where every citizen, divyang or not, can live with dignity, equality and opportunity. True freedom is achieved when no one is invisible, excluded or left behind.
Jai Hind.

Zero deaths. That is the mission.
A dedicated team of forest officers, patrolling staff, loco pilots, drone operators and control centre monitors works round the clock at Tamil Nadu’s AI-powered Elephant Control and Command Centre in Madukkarai in Coimbatore to keep elephants safe. In just over two and a half years, the system has facilitated around 9,481 safe elephant crossings ensuring Zero elephant deaths on Railway Tracks, demonstrating how technology, human vigilance and teamwork can come together to protect wildlife.
The system has generated more than 7,116 real-time alerts for railway authorities and loco pilots, leading to 3,821 instances where trains were slowed down or stopped to allow elephants to cross safely. Beyond elephants, the system has also detected deer, gaurs and leopards, creating a comprehensive AI-enabled wildlife monitoring network. The Government of Tamil Nadu continues to strengthen the system. AI-powered drones have been deployed for wider landscape surveillance, extending monitoring beyond fixed thermal cameras and providing real-time situational awareness of elephant movements.
No system can ever be perfect, and the worry never really goes away. But we must keep learning, improving and doing better. A big shoutout to these unsung heroes whose constant vigilance, dedication and hard work make this possible.

A daycare employee at Capgemini's Bengaluru campus couldn't bear the abuse of the kids at the centre.
She reported it to supervisor, but instead of taking action, they fired her. She then became a whistleblower and leaked videos that exposed the abuse.
In the videos, toddlers were made to sit inside the drum of a front-loading washing machine, had water sprayed into their mouths using a toilet jet spray, were locked inside bathrooms, and were forced into narrow, water-filled pipes to frighten them. The videos triggered outrage, forcing authorities to act.
Today, according to media reports, the police have arrested the whistleblower only for allegedly "leaking sensitive videos." Lol! What a system! A poor woman with a clear conscience stood up to the powerful and went public, not for personal gain or with any malicious intent, but solely to protect those children. And she's the one who gets arrested.
Its unfair to generalise and hold an entire generation accountable like this. Heinous crimes are not a Gen Z invention. Every generation has produced saints and scoundrels.
Previous generations had anonymity; Gen Z lives under relentless spotlight of CCTV and social media, where every act is recorded, and dissected in public.
What has changed is visibility, not the human nature.
There was a cab driver in Delhi who dreamt every day of becoming an army man. He finally made it on his third attempt & was assigned to the J & K Rifles. Within a year he was in Kargil and there was a war on. On this day, 26 years ago, Rifleman Sanjay Kumar volunteered to lead an attack on Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley. When they were pinned down by machine gun fire, Sanjay Kumar jumped out and charged. He took a couple of bullets, reached the bunker, killed all three inside, and then turned their machine gun on the rest of the bunkers and fleeing enemy troops. He was awarded a Param Vir Chakra, one of only seven living winners.
Amidst mountains of concrete, debris, dust & silence Rescuers in Venezuela found a scene which moved even the strongest. Under the remains of the collapsed structure a dog https://t.co/LUReHMlp5z didn't bark, stayed motionless, looking in to the eyes. And it's body became a shield, beneath it lay a child. While everything around him collapsed, this little boy was still alive, protected by a friend, who refused to move to rather than abandon his friend who needed him most.
Rescue team reports they were speechless, they found them after few days of the disaster.
The dog at first refused to come out as if he wanted to ensure the rescue of his friend. The dog was rescued. Moments later the child, amidst cheers, tears & emotions.
This image depicts something no disasters can destroy. When nature tests the strength of a people, gestures emerge that love, compassion & loyalty can appear from where we least expect them
That life always finds a reason to resist.
A miracle from God! Don't look for answers
The answer is blowing in the wind🙏

One man's mission to revive #Bindusagar inspires many
Every weekend, while most people in the city are catching up on rest or leisure, 28-year-old software engineer Pritish Nayak can be found along the banks of Bindusagar, armed with gloves, sacks and an unwavering commitment to conserving the ancient lake.
For nearly a year now, Nayak has devoted his weekends to cleaning the iconic water body in the heart of Bhubaneswar's Old Town. What began as an individual effort to remove plastic waste and other debris from the lake has gradually evolved into a community movement, drawing the participation of students, young professionals and local residents.

People who celebrate 10-minute deliveries as a sign of India’s progress should read this.
During the Malviya Nagar fire incident, locals say fire brigades reached nearly 45 minutes late. Residents had to spread mattresses to rescue people trapped inside, including foreign nationals.
Development is when emergency services arrive in minutes, not when groceries do.
It's Ravi Shastri's birthday today. And most of you probably remember him for coin tosses and 'tracer bullets.'
But Ravi Shastri was a Champion of Champions in 1985 in a tournament that featured the likes of Imran, Hadlee, Kapil and Viv Richards, getting there with a phenomenal work ethic and attitude.
Ravi Shastri was the first Indian cricketer to openly give back as good as he got from those sledging him, Aussies, Poms, even the fearsome West Indian pacers.
He averaged 40 plus away against Australia and the West Indies with a memorable century against Roberts, Holding and Marshall at St John's and an epic double hundred at Sydeney.
Ravi was the hardest bargainer before he got on to a project, but once he committed, he worked like a complete professional, and again, there aren't too many you can say that about. And he'd actually buy you a drink after as well.
Have a great year @RaviShastriOfc, there are few who've done as much with what they've been given

On one day in late April, something very unusual happened. Every single one of the planet's top 50 hottest cities was in just one country: India. https://t.co/tMrn2k74py
