Thousands of PSB branches are functioning with just 2-3 employees, expected to handle everything, from cash and customer service to loans, government schemes, compliance, digital banking and recovery.
Yet, instead of asking why branches are chronically understaffed, employees are expected to sacrifice even basic lunch breaks in the name of customer service.
Why doesn’t the regulator inspect whether a branch has adequate manpower before issuing customer service directives ?
Why aren’t banks held accountable for operating with dangerously inadequate staffing ?
Is employee welfare not a regulatory concern ?
A strong banking system cannot be built by overburdening a handful of employees while celebrating record profits and dividends.
Bank employees are not a limitless resource. If customer service matters, adequate staffing must become a regulatory mandate, not an afterthought.
Accountability must be fixed on those who regulate and those who own Public Sector Banks.
Bankers don’t need sympathy. They need adequate manpower, humane working conditions, and regulators willing to enforce them.

मैं बैंक मैनेजर हूँ मेरी शाखा में मेरे अलावा दो और लोग है.. शाखा में लोन, KYC, डिपॉजिट, रिकवरी, सरकारी योजनाओं के अलावा हर कार्य होता है। रोजाना सुबह के 9:30 से रात के 7:30 बजते है। अब आरबीआई बताए कि सुबह से शाम तक लंच करना है कि नहीं? आखिर बैंकर भी इंसान है भाई हम मशीन नही है।

I have visited the RBI many times they take their lunch in a relaxed manner. In Head Offices, they enjoy lunch break chai break , and chutta break peacefully. Even DFS officials have their lunch comfortably. Then why treat branch staff like slaves?
If the cashier goes for lunch, who will officiate the counter? In 90% of branches, there is only one cashier available.
The public is not aware of this reality, but policymakers and the RBI should be. Or does the RBI expect branch staff to keep customers engaged by asking, “Sir, kaise hain? Cashier lunch pe hai… Pariwar kaise hai?”
Does the RBI or DFS have data on how many branches are running with just one clerk? Are there any SOPs or guidelines for officiating the cashier during lunch breaks, handling cash for 30 minutes, proper counting, and handover after the break?
