Who is this #ChampatRai—a man who, for years, subsisted on a meager meal of one-and-a-half rotis and *ramdana* (amaranth) khichdi in the evening, living in a simple, modest room at Karsevakpuram? Who is this man, #ChampatRai, who stands tall and imposing like a massive banyan tree?

During the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi in 1975, Champat Rai was a young physics professor at RSM Degree College in Dhampur, Bijnor. The police arrived to arrest him because of his association with the Sangh. Immensely popular among his students, Champat Rai understood the potential consequences of his arrest there, just as the police anticipated the fierce resistance the students might put up.

Professor Champat Rai told the police officers, "You may leave; I will come to the police station after finishing the class." Recognizing the weight of his words, the officers departed. After concluding the class and calmly instructing his students to go home, Professor Champat Rai went to his own home, sought his parents' blessings by touching their feet, and then reported to the police station, ready for a long period of imprisonment.

After enduring 18 months of extreme hardship in various Uttar Pradesh jails, he emerged as a man of steely resolve. Shri Rajju Bhaiya, the *Sarsanghchalak* (Chief) of the Sangh, recognized his inner strength and entrusted him with the responsibility of mobilizing Ayodhya for the Ram Mandir cause.

Champat Rai walked away from his government job and dedicated himself entirely to the mission of Lord Ram. He traveled from village to village across the Awadh region, knocking on every door. He raised a local cadre of youth ready to face any situation. Every nook and corner of Ayodhya came to know Champat Rai, and he, in turn, became intimately familiar with every alley and lane of the city. He acquired such profound knowledge of Awadh’s history, geography, and current affairs that his associates began calling him the "Encyclopedia of Ayodhya."

Even before the demolition of the Babri structure, Champat Rai had begun gathering documentary evidence regarding the Ram Mandir. He read and preserved hundreds of thousands of pages of documents—meticulously studying and safeguarding every single tome—until his home was filled with these papers; in the process, he committed every detail to memory. When K. Parasaran and fellow lawyers stepped into the legal battle for the *Janmabhoomi* (birthplace), it was this very man who provided them with irrefutable evidence.

On December 6, 1992, prominent leaders on the dais were instructing the *Kar Sevaks* on discipline and issuing various directives, including solemn pledges not to damage the Babri structure. At that moment, Champat Rai was standing some distance away from the stage with local youths. When a journalist asked him, "What will happen now?" he smiled and replied, "This is Ram’s *Vanar Sena* (Monkey Army); they haven't come here to do PT exercises at the sound of a whistle... they will accomplish exactly what they came here to do."

Saying this, he picked up a shovel and headed towards the Babri structure; then, the chant of "Jai Shri Ram" reverberated, and... history was made. It is not without reason that the respected Champat Rai was appointed Secretary of the Ram Mandir Trust; he has dedicated his entire life to the holy feet of Ram Lalla. People affectionately call him "Ram Lalla’s *Patwari*" (keeper of the records). He is a warrior of *Sanatan*—not some loudmouthed, blabbering coward.

Regarding the legal cases concerning the demolition of the Babri structure, Champat Rai—following Kalyan Singh—is the only person who has consistently and openly accepted responsibility for that event before both the courts and the general public. Champat Rai ji has stated that as soon as he beholds the *shikhar* (spire) of the Ram Mandir, he will dedicate himself to inspiring the younger generation to take up the responsibility regarding Mathura.
