🎉 Exciting news! My publication has just been published! It’s about political homophobia in Russia and how it’s connected to anti-Ukrainian sentiments. A huge thanks to everyone who supported this work. Check it out here: https://t.co/2zPOz9iTV8
🎓 Just defended my dissertation! After countless hours of research, writing, and revisions, it’s finally done. Grateful for all the support along the way, especially to @shamuskhan, Gil Eyal, @m_thompson, @tmgonsalves, and @samagreene. I am over the moon happy!
This is incredibly close to home, but also from a very distant past.
Nastya Krasilnikova, one of the most important and consequential Russian investigative journalist, just published her new multi-year investigation of sexual abuse in Russian and international high schools: https://t.co/qc1J5D9VMI. Some of the abusers are on the run, some are still professors or PhD students at prestigious Western universities.
This is close to home as one of the abusers had worked, for many years, in my high school #57, the best and most prestigious Moscow high schools for many years. For those who love Russia, he was featured, with his family, in famous documentary "My Perestroika", shot years before the abuse started.
I even taught, part-time, a class with some of his victims, and cannot forgive myself for not knowing then. In 2016, I was the chair of the alumni commission that issued a short report on the matter - the first (and the last) time sexual abuse in Russian high schools and those who tolerated it for years were publicly condemned.
I do not know much about the Sambation summer school and other episodes of abuse investigated in the podcast, but I hope that @goetheuni and @AarhusUni_int, the current employers of some of the protagonists will pay attention. It is an embarrassment that @nyuniversity features under the hashtag #institutionalbetrayal.
This is not the first Nastya's investigation of sexual abuse in prestigious Russian schools - and you cannot imagine the backlash she and her team (and of course heroic victims going public) faced even before the war. The discussions that the West has painfully gone through decades ago - Is it really fine for teachers to sleep with high school students? - and still taboo for many people.
The main lesson I learned from my grandmother is that nothing is worse, meaningless, or more tragic than war. In the last two years, this wisdom has been tattooed on my heart and soul. I'm trying to remain calm and support my loved ones, but my guts are twisted
@hebagowayed Felt this. Asked cops for help with a stroller since my toddler had fallen asleep on the way, and the elevator at the 'accessible' station was out (no surprise). Got a 'not our job.' If not this, then what exactly is it?

I show how authoritarian regimes strategically utilize homophobia to bolster their nationalist agendas, achieving domestic and global anti-Western consolidation. This strategic use of traditionalist themes could be a key factor behind the growing illiberal trend observed globally
In 2010, no clear link between attitudes towards Ukraine & LGBTQ+ rights. By 2016, a sig correlation emerges, showing the impact of state-promoted anti-Western ideology, which uses these topics to promote themselves as defenders of traditional values against Western influence
Per @novayagazeta_en snapshot estimates, every second vote for Putin in March 2024 elections was fabricated. That is, he didn't get even a majority of the vote - despite that opposition was barred from running or campaigning.
The "Shpilkin method", named after statistician and election forensics analyst Sergei Shpilkin, is basically very simple - it just assumes that without falsifications, the relationship between turnout and Putin's vote share follows the normal (Gaussian) distribution. The estimate of the fabricated vote is the difference between the "normal" and reported numbers.
The Shpilkin method does produce a good estimate of the extent of falsifications. In those elections that were not falsified, Putin's vote share have always followed the normal distribution. In 2011, our own estimates of the extent of the vote fraud, which did not rely on any assumptions about distributions (https://t.co/ox7q2Y0ifd) basically confirmed the estimates via the Shpilkin method.
Woman in line to Navalny's grave, tears in her eyes: 'I wish to see the day everything falls apart. But at my age, I fear I won’t.' 'I feel you, my dear, me too.
Being emotionally tied to a piece of land that has turned into a true dictatorship is a source of endless suffering. A part of me was buried in Moscow today.
Since yesterday we have been looking for a place where we can organize a farewell event for Alexey. We have called most of the private and public funeral agencies, commercial venues and funeral halls.
Some of them say the place is fully booked. Some refuse when we mention the surname "Navalny". In one place, we were told that the funeral agencies were forbidden to work with us.
After a day of searching, we still haven’t found the farewell hall.
Two years. They tried to erase us from history. But we are still here.
We thank everyone who has supported us and continues to do so.
Keep believing in Ukraine.
We will prevail🇺🇦
