Kolkata unfolded as a city where heritage breathes through everyday life. And yet, it must be said: ‘Kolkata is a world of its own.’

In Kerala’s Ottamthullal, there are no separate singers, actors, or dancers. The artist becomes all of them, where voice, expression, and movement merge into one flowing performance that entertains while holding up a mirror to society.
For Kannan, this art is not something he performs, it is something he lives. A Kerala-based Ottamthullal artist, he entered this world at just four years old.
Over time, what began as childhood learning turned into a lifelong commitment to protect and carry forward a fading cultural language.
The form itself was created in the 18th century by Kunchan Nambiar, a Malayalam poet and satirist from Kerala.
Born out of a moment of humiliation during a court performance, he reimagined art as something closer to people. Through humour, satire, and simple Malayalam, Ottamthullal became a voice for the common man.
Today, Kannan continues that legacy on stage. One artist, three forms, and a tradition that still breathes through every performance.
