The third vessel featured in our #SpotlightSeries represents a truly unique class of seismic survey vessels. The record-holding RAMFORM HYPERION (IMO 9676890), with her 104-meter length and extraordinary 70-meter width, is an example of highly evolved, specialized engineering for offshore energy exploration.

Built in 2017, the Titan-class vessel’s design was inspired by the Norwegian naval intelligence vessel MARJATA (IMO 9648659), and delivers 26.4 megawatts of total power through three controllable pitch propellers, enabling her to tow extensive spreads of multisensor recording equipment.

The RAMFORM HYPERION is equipped with 24 streamer reels (16 aligned across the main deck and eight in a second row). Her unique hull design provides the exceptional stability required for deploying extensive underwater sensor arrays. In 2021, she set a #GuinnessWorldRecord by towing 144.45 km of streamers on 18 cables in the Barents Sea. She also holds the record as the world’s widest monohulled vessel.

SynMax's maritime domain awareness platform, Theia, tracked the RAMFORM HYPERION during operations off the coast of Egypt from August to September 2025. Her movements are consistent with a vessel conducting seismic surveys essential for energy exploration or offshore wind development.

Maxar’s shot of the international space station went viral yesterday and it reminded me that the Germans imaged it with TerraSAR-X in 2008. If you did this same maneuver today it would be considered groundbreaking and innovative. The Germans, man. Damn.
