What’s being conveniently overlooked by Muslims trying to cancel John Cleese is that he helped create Monty Python’s Life of Brian in 1979, a comedy that relentlessly satirized Christians, Jews, religious institutions, and, above all, blind adherence to dogma.

When critics dismissed it as “just a comedy,” Cleese argued that the film was also profoundly religious because it forced audiences to confront the historical and religious context surrounding the life of Jesus.

The deeper question Cleese raised then remains relevant today: Is religion merely the rigid observance of dogma, or is it a lifelong exploration of faith… an effort to become a better, holier person with a deeper understanding of God?

Submission and obedience to God are especially explicit themes in Islam. But that distinction matters: obedience to God is not the same as unquestioning obedience to religious authorities.

Every major religion must wrestle with the same fundamental question: Are believers faithfully seeking God, or merely obeying the people who claim to speak for Him?

I’m no fan of Cleese’s history of supporting liberal politics but this central question, which he has been asking for half a century, is a valid one the most religious people I know and respect ask themselves often.

From 5th-7th grade, I went to an inner city where a majority of the kids were on free or reduced lunch. Just as Nikole Hannah-Jones writes, the hardest part was the disruptions in class. I fell behind on math during these years and never caught up, taking remedial math throughout most of college. But my mom didn’t send me here for political reasons, it was out of necessity, because my mom was broke and we moved in w my great grandma and this was the closest free public school. My mom married again with the sole mission of getting me to a better school

To purposefully subject your children to this environment distills progressivism to its core, and is the same reason blue cities are full of homelessness and crime. They truly believe antisocial behavior is ok, and to enforce any kind of rules is oppressive
