Captured in Lemanda, Arusha
Beneath the dramatic skies of northern Tanzania, a Maasai man walks alongside his donkeys, a powerful reminder that working animals are more than helpers; they are partners in livelihoods, resilience, and community life.
One of our favourite🧡
Meet Prisca.
Since 2011 she’s sold fodder at Meserani Livestock Market using her 2 donkeys.
For her, donkeys are like a vehicle — she travels 10+ km daily to collect fodder, and now advocates for donkey welfare as a member of our Meserani group.
Sometimes the strongest bonds are built without words.
Between people and animals, trust, care, and companionship create connections that shape everyday life.
Because when we care for animals, they give back more than we often realize.
Happy Foal Friday
#FoalFriday
This International Worker's Day, we recognize the strength of donkeys and their owners working side by side in gold mines, farms, and other places—supporting livelihoods and sustaining communities.
Together, they remind us that every worker deserves care and dignity.

Raising donkey welfare awareness in Mgusu
Through the Geita Hoof Print Project (supported by Brooke East Africa), ASPA has installed signposts promoting the Five Animal Welfare Freedoms—helping donkey owners and communities improve care and treatment.
Awareness drives change.
21 donkeys rescued in Lengijave including 4 young foals.
After a 7-hour illegal trek from Meserani, suspects were found asleep waiting for transport across the border. Swift action by ASPA & STPU led to arrests and ensured the animals’ safety.

🐴 Celebrating a Year of Progress for Donkey Welfare 🐴
From June 2025, IAPWA was proud to work alongside @aspa_tz to support Donkey Mobile Clinics in the hard to reach communities of Nanja and Ngarenanyuki in Tanzania – areas where access to veterinary care for working animals is extremely limited 🚑
In just six months, these Donkey Mobile Clinics:
💉 Treated 750+ working donkeys suffering from illness or injury
👨🏻 Reached 450+ owners and community members, providing education on humane care and responsible donkey welfare
Donkeys received treatment for painful wounds, lameness, musculoskeletal issues, eye and skin conditions, alongside deworming and essential vitamin support – improving their health and reducing suffering. The educational element of the programme also ensured that the clinics extended beyond immediate treatment and led to long-term welfare improvement 📈
As our donkey welfare programme comes to a close, we’re proud to reflect on what we’ve achieved together. Thank you for helping make this life-changing work possible 🤎
In Rwamgasa, Geita, a training on improved donkey cart harness fitting is making a difference.
Moga is an early adopter of a modified single-shaft donkey cart, which reduces strain and improves balance on Animal
Geita Hoof Print Project is supported by the Brooke East Africa.
In rural Arusha, water = donkeys.
These animals provide more support to Tanzanian livelihoods than almost any other domestic animal, yet their work is often invisible.
We're urging communities to protect the animals that help them survive.

🎉❤️ Wishing you a happy and compassionate new year from ASPA!
Let's make it a year where communities come together to value and care for ALL animals - from the furriest friends to the humblest donkeys.
Together, let's spread kindness and compassion! 🌟

Arusha's dry season is harsh this year. 😥
The solution? In 2023 @TheBrookeEA-supported 20,000L water point in Meserani! It stores a reliable supply for 1,600 donkeys & 8,000 livestock, drastically cutting the distance women/children must trek.
A true win for welfare
🇹🇿 After hauling backbreaking loads for 25 miles (40km), 300 donkeys in Tanzania are suffering 6+ hours in the baking sun. We must build shaded rest areas with water troughs before summer hits! 🐴
