Saying you know about autism if you only know autistic children (not adults) is like saying you’re a butterfly expert while only ever having seen caterpillars.
Obsessively reading about the links between your astrology chart & someone else’s is so much easier than interacting with them.
Especially if you like them.
I don’t mean it (I do)

@PeripheralMinds I suppose the theories about under or over brain connectivity would cover the idea that it can be both.
Also, ideas about attention feel important here. Perhaps we’re better at (& sometimes worse at) ignoring brain/emotion signals when we’re focused on something else.
Perhaps so much of what is called “masking” in #autism is actually compartmentalising.
I had a genuinely joyous night last night. Putting aside current feelings of anxiety, uncertainty & sadness.
My joy was true, my unexpressed pain was true

@dutcharc@AutisticDoctor@cjcrompton No worries-I’m so pleased you used it and found it useful. And many thanks for using the Tweet directly.
I would be very, very happy for you to use the comparison any time.
@AutisticDoctor@cjcrompton@dutcharc Great to read about Hilde’s keynote too. Sounds like it was a really powerful case for how much more research needs to be done with autistic adults.
@AutisticDoctor@cjcrompton@dutcharc Ah, thanks so much for finding & crediting me @AutisticDoctor ! I hoped it would be useful in this sort of context, which is why I searched my brain for an analogy that could resonate.
Am a writer in non-anon life so particularly nice to know these words have travelled.
As someone who doesn’t always “do woman” in the expected way due to being #autistic I sometimes experience hostility from women & men (despite presenting v femme).
Esp if I’m assertive/confident. Surely this accounts for some unfair hostility to trans women?
Wondering what autistic writers can learn from Toni Morrison. She wrote of black women whose narratives had been written by others-
who had no official history of their own. Whose culture was negated.
Feeling inspired by her.
@BakiyevaLiliya Yes. Not saying that the diagnosis caused it. But my increasing self knowledge & self care is causing me to protect my boundaries more.
Has anyone’s marriage ended after an autism diagnosis? #askingautistics
I feel like I’m less likely to take crap.
Also, me & husband have always argued meanly & he’ll say things like “oh, because you’re autistic, boo boo” tho is normally kind.
I feel like it’s unacceptable
7/12 For the record then: on the Prime Minister’s first visit to Wales the national news outlets of Wales @ITVWales@BBCWalesNews and @WalesOnline weren’t allowed interviews. We were offered chance to ask questions but not to film them.
@Spectrum What an uninformed, unreferenced blog. 90% of autism research IS already on causes of autism.
When an unintended consequence of “eliminating” certain conditions is to get rid of autistic people, neurodiversity wlll be a great lens to reflect on why that was a mistake.
I’m going to have to get one of those sunflower #autism lanyards. Hot busy train. Had reserved seat but nearly had meltdown trying to get to it & people in front of me & behind me in a logjam
Walked the whole train. Battling desperately not to scream or collapse

I sometimes feel bad that I leave all the cooking to my partner but as #ActuallyAutistic person I struggle to cook.
Have now seen Instant Pots & think this might be something even I can use. Has an Instant Pot changed anyone’s culinary world? #AskingAutistics?
The two most popular (with the public) Tory leadership candidates are, I would guess, #neurodivergent (Boris Johnson & Rory Stewart).
As are many political leaders.
The public both attracted to, & repelled by them. Endlessly fascinating.
