RIP to Ron Green Sr., a legendary former @theobserver sports columnist who has passed away at age 95.
When he was 92, I went to see him in Charlotte and talk about his love for the Masters and Augusta. He pointed out he had spent more than a year of his life there, writing about the place he once called "Eden with flagsticks."
And I still remember what Senior, as we all called him, also said that day about Augusta:
“I liked going out in the morning on tournament days, just the way it felt. And looking at all the beauty and letting it all sort of wash over me, kind of gathering you up and sending you out to work. I was in love with it. I look back now, and I was silly in love with it. Like a guy in love with a girl. But I’m glad I was. I think it showed through in what I wrote.”
Ron was a gentle giant of sports journalism and an @theobserver icon.
