I'm not a politician or an economist - so might be missing something here - but when a system requires you spend $1,800,000,000,000 a year subsidizing industries that are actually rendering our own planet UNINHABITABLE, it might be time to find a new system. And find it fast.
A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, & most of the energy that does, moves the car, not people.
Sound efficient?

It’s REALLY important that #Vancouver’s Downtown Business Association, who were originally against downtown bike-lanes, have become one of their most vigourous supporters, because of EVIDENCE that bike-lanes are better for downtown business than any street parking they replace.
Bikes have been given half as much as space as motor traffic here. Over this 30 seconds, that space moves four times as many bikes as cars (and they are mostly cars), with none of the emissions. Unbelievably
efficient spatially and environmentally.
