@nntaleb So, following quite simple logic we can conclude that either your second point does not make sense or the original assurance given to Gorbachev didn't make any sense, since why would you promise something to an entity that is scheduled for dissolution.
@nntaleb Regarding the second point, as original tweet says Gorbachev was assured that AFTER the break up of USSR NATO would not expand. As you rightly point out, USSR is no longer, hence that assurance can be applied now (i.e. after USSR breakup) if we follow the rules of common sense.
@nntaleb I would not hurry to call him ignoramus since both of the points you made are questionable. The argument of NATO voluntary membership is a formality. USA has a significant influence on political decisions of European countries.
