โ
But, yeah, perhaps these peaceful moments are just as healing as the childlike eruptions of happiness Nico remembers from a time before the first death struck. Before darkness wound itself around his ankles and melded into bones.
Perhaps Will ๐๐จ happiness.
โ
โ
โ Wouldnโt you like to know? Could have been the ghosts. โ
Happiness is a strange concept. Itโs been so long since any kind of joy has not been tainted by infestations of darkness that Nico fails to perceive the glimpses of it.
โ
โIs that why all my cowboy hats mysteriously went missing?โ He laughs, momentarily just grinning like an idiot st the sight of Nicoโs smile. There was simply nothing Will loved more than seeing his boyfriend so happy and comfortable.
โ
โ No. โ Nico shuts him down with a tender smile curving his lips, painted fingers tracing the shape of his knuckles, then gently pressing into the dips of his joints.
โ Youโd have stupid ideas like wear it every day, and I happen to be fond of your silly curls. โ
โ
โIf thatโs what makes me weird, then I donโt think being weird is such a bad thing. Think Iโll even put it on a hat.โ He grins cheekily, gazing at their hands. There was genuinely nothing more rewarding than these quiet little moments where he could just exist with his boyfriend.
โ
โ Mm. . . โ A pipe dream or a truth that still tastes like a lie every time it slips from Willโs lips. Nico will choose to believe it even if his world chars at the edges.
Reaching up to catch one of his hands, he folds it into his own. Cold silver and a death-like touch,โ
โ
โThank you for indulging me.โ He replied softly, pressing a quiet kiss into Nicoโs hair. Finishing up his sandwich, he lets out a soft groan as he stretches his arms above his head.
โYou mean the world to me, you know that?โ
โ
โ Yeah. Yeah, you did. โ Itโs hard to tell when his stomach twists around sharp acid at the mere thought of it, but he has yet to feel the urge to retch. Thatโs positive. It means it must be good.
โ Thanks . . . for this. โ
โ
โYessir.โ He grins cheekily, taking a bite of his own sandwich with a satisfied hum. It wasnโt fancy by any means, but it was a pretty decent meal for the sunshine boy,
โMm, I did pretty good, huh?โ
โ
acid to claw at his throat until he feels nauseous and uncertain, Nico takes a bite off the sandwich and focuses on the actual taste rather than imaginary gravedirt on his tongue.
He nudges Will then. โ Eat your sandwich.
โ
โ
Nico wonโt let the sudden, strained iciness around them โ and it may just be his powers reacting to an unprepared stir of his emotions โ ruin the picnic date Will had planned.
Despite his stomach warning him of the consequences, actively trying to stop him by sending โ
โ
โTouchรฉ..โ He relents with a soft little breath. After some of their more recent adventures, he couldnโt help but worry from time to time. But he was learning to roll with the punches again, especially if he had people like Nico around him.
โAnd Iโm going to do my best-
Still, the touch is welcome. Soothing. Nico chases it with his lips only to press another kiss to his hand.
โ Iโve already lost everything. Youโre all I have. โ
โ
โ You brought it up first, โ Nico argues with a stubborn curl of dark brows. His question was never meant to entice the possibility of an early end to their lives.
He simply wanted to know if Will ever worried about the future threaded around their ankles. Them โ together.
โIโll try not to. I want to focus on how happy I am here with you.โ He murmurs gently, stroking his cheek for a moment before letting his hand settle near Nicoโs again.
โPromise youโll do the same?โ
โ
Lips purse into a thin line, eyes avoiding eyes so easily capable of striking him down despite the gentleness in Willโs touch. He didnโt mean to imply, but thereโs truth enough in that statement to refuse taking them back.
โ
โNico.โ He warns softly, frowning as he moves a hand to gently lift Nicoโs chin up. He didnโt like the implications of the statement much, fearing the idea of losing his boyfriend to spare himself.
โA world without you in it is not one I want to be in.โ
โ
his bones and infuse them with more of this devastating power if it assured him of Willโs safety.
This pain that leaves him bedridden, the threat of being devoured by his own darkness . . . itโs a small price to pay for Willโs life.
โ Even if itโs the last thing I do. โ
โ
โ
โ You are. โ Determined if nothing else. Nico thinks about it often, and as long as the dead are chained at his feet and shadows bendable at will, one of them is going to grow up. Nico would much rather carve the last bit of marrow from โ
โ
โAll the time. There are some days, like today, where I wonder whatโs ahead and then there are other days where Iโm not even sure Iโm gonna make it to adulthood.โ He murmurs softly, chewing his lip.
โI donโt have as much bravado as I pretend to have, you know?โ
โ
โ . . . and the one after. โ If there even is a choice of rebirth for him. Nico doesnโt much enjoy thinking of his own death, ironic as it is. He knows the Underworld better than anyone, and yet there are questions he neither has nor wants answers to. โ
โ
โI promise. Youโre stuck with me in this life and the next one.โ He hums happily, gently squeezing his hands. In truth, he feels just as lucky to have met someone he loved so much.
โThough I think Iโd like to stay in this one for as long as possible with you.โ
