Something thats not specifically mentioned is migration due to natural disasters and #climatechange, even though there are millions of people affected by this. What I found interesting is the way in which fear plays a role. Fear of the (cultural?) unknown. 2/3

Today’s podcast discussed the notion of #climaterefugees. The UN defines a refugee as someone who is unable/unwilling to return to their country of origin owing to a fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, social group, political opinion. 1/3

scientific approaches and new technologies are dominant in tackling these issues. Unfortunately, the connection between science and local knowledge systems is missing, which leads to these measures having little impact.

In this weeks podcast, I found it interesting that #climatechange was identified as a risk multiplier, especially in vulnerable regions that already deal with political/social violence. These problems caused by climate change are often ‘solved’ by new technological advances.

However, I think this is quite unfair as it's a fundamental part of their culture. We should keep in mind that the things we value, are not necessarily the same in other communities. I'm afraid that we sometimes forget about this @asweknowitRUG

But what if we have reached the maximum of our (technological) adaptive capacities? Something as complex as climate change cannot be solved by one discipline. It's time to go beyond the boundaries of what we know today, and try to work together with local cultures @asweknowitRUG
